got the music master in today, absolutely love it, but i want to get a new pick guard so i can use put a single coil back in the bridge position. Warmoth seems to have a decent deal on pick guards but they say they will only work with the warmoth bodies. Pickguardian wants about $50 for the same thing and it would still have to be modified to what I want.

the whole "custom" part is related to not using the 3 way mustang switches, instead using jaguar rollers so i can have a volume and tone knob for each pickup. the one thing i found tonight was having to use the volume pot to change dynamics instead of just using a 3 way switch like i normally do on my other guitars, i figure if i'm getting a new pick guard anyways, might as well try and fix this while i'm at it.

You could try Chandler Guitars. I'd love to see a '72 Duosonic With a switch delete, that would pe the perfect pickup layout. You might even get them to do the switching layout. I've never tried them. I have no idea if they're any good.

he is the one that made the custom 2 single coil pickguard for my melody maker.

all i did was take this pickguard they were selling on ebay and photoshopped it exactly how i wanted it without the humbucker cut or the switch cut and with 2 single coil cuts instead. Im sure if you take a good photo of a mustang pickguard, and then photoshop it exactly how you want it and email it to him he will be happy to make it for you.

it cost me only like 35 bucks after shipping, i ordered it on monday and had it in my hands on thursday. I recommend him over and over again.

+1. I have sent orginal pickguards to some of the best in the country to be copied (WD, Terrapin, ect) and there is always a screw hole that is off. Only one exception. Pickguardian made a replacemnet neck pickguard for my 1985 Rickenbacker 4003 bass (two piece pickguard) and it was perfect.

how much bigger is a jag roller cut than a mustang 3way slider cut ?


do the screw holes on the roller harness/bracket line up with the screw holes for the 3 way sliders ?


if they do you could just screw the roller brackets in and then shave back the roller/3way hole with a dremmul




im sure the screw holes don't line up, that would be way to fucking easy. everything has to be fucking difficult

I asked someone on offset to measure, the holes look about the same size, maybe 1mm difference or so, but i will have to make a couple of custom brackets, not too big of a deal. I might just go to rona and find a 90 degree thin piece of metal and take a dremel to it.

i looked into making my own bracket but after a week or fucking with bent metal i just bought the fucking 9 doller part.
THIS however will need some fabricating to fit your body/pickguard.

whenever i have made a guard for myself usually all the screw holes line up, but there is generally a couple on the last bit that want to try and slant.
rod, i want to say that thefirst duocaster was right on, but the second was off right?
or am i thinking backwards?
either way, if you send me the og pickguard, i could make a template of it and make you the guard as long you told me what you wanted. material is like 15-20 bucks, only takes a few mins to do and shipping is cheap enough.

I got the pickguard for my jazz bass customized to fit a p bass pickup from Warmoth and the screw pattern lined up perfectly with the body.

the reason the second one didn't line up was because you used the same template from the first gutiar which was a Mexican squier strat from around 98 i think

the white one was older and a bullet. two totally different guitars. i never even asked for the pickguard with any intention of the holes lining up because its a fuckin bullet and i was just going to make my own holes in it anyways.


so no fault by you in any way, that kind of thing just doesn't stress me out any more with the level of guitars that i play. more holes the better, i don't give a shit.



now if i was dealing with a 40 year old musicmaster that might be a little different.

Yes, the Warmoth guards are not a drop in replacement, as you can see from that picture of my '75 Music Master body. They're also a bit off up by the neck pocket too:



My friend Dennis is a CS Master Builder for Fender, and he chuckled about how bad Warmoth gets their pickguards - he said they never seem to fit right on any Fender models.

I may get a new one from pickguardian or somewhere for that project guitar eventually, but for now, it does the job, and I wasn't initially planning on being all that picky about the guitar... but I may be changing my mind. I'll probably start a separate thread about it so I don't continue hijacking this one.

BTW, are you planning on doing a Musicmaster to Duo Sonic type conversion? If so, that's pretty much what I'm in the middle of doing. If not, what exactly are you going to put into the bridge position for the second pickup?

I'm assuming from what I've read that you have a 72 Music Master. My '75 (and probably your '72) lacked the bridge route that earlier (64-69 Duo Sonic era) MM's had, so I took it over to the Custom Shop and had Dennis do the Duo Sonic switch and bridge pickup routing on it for me. So even though it's not "stock" Fender still did the work.



If you are doing a "Duo Sonic" and find someone who makes a dead on replacement guard that fits perfectly, please let me know!

the bridge has already been routed for a humbucker so it just needs a bit more for a regular single coil to fit slanted, surprisingly my cheap-o ebay mustang guard almost fit perfectly and just required some filing around the neck joint area. i might have a lead on a a vintage guard that has a 3 way switch from offset, but we'll see how it works out. i *just* missed out on a vintage guard in the classifieds here (damn you stewart ) but keep watching them, they come up quite often.

The Mustang style covers probably wouldn't work - the pickups I have in there are not flat tops / polepieces - they're staggered. On the upside, they're custom wound by Abagail Ybarra, with one of them being RW / RP like a Mustang / Duo Sonic should be, so I really can't complain.
