budget shortscale basses

I've never owned a bass guitar before but I really quite fancy one. I know I want a shortscale bass because I've played a friends Mustang bass and loved it. Being a student, i'm pretty much skint. Has anyone used the Squier Bronco bass? or are there many other options out there in that price range?

if you are patient you can get a mustang bass between 200-300 bucks.

i would get this over a squier bronco bass. why? because its sonic blue.

whenever i see sonic blue on a P-bass it takes me back to the age of 13 where all i listened to was Enema of the State

I have one of rondo's short scale jazz basses. Good quality for the price. I changed the tuners, the bridge, and the pups. It was neck heavy with the old tuners (not now with the lights I put on it), and, surprisingly, the new higher mass bridge (I got this one: http://www.warmoth.com/Schaller-463-4-S ... 4C722.aspx) really improved the tone. Especially the low E's response. I think the string spacing's actually standard, so you could put any bridge that fits a fender on there (badass, etc.). The bronco has a narrower string spacing. The ones' I've played in the store have been fine... probably pretty good players once they're set up properly.

One thing I don't like about the short scale rondo's are the body size... they're really small.
