i really don't understand the stigma against bolt on necks.

when are you going to wake up and realize that if a bolt on neck works fine on a mustang it will work fine on a SG or a LP?

who cares if its bolt on? lots of guitars are bolt on.

here's how i think about (i know how you feel about the bolt on v. set neck thang):

fenders sound the way they do, due in part to the use of bolt on necks. there's advantages to it. you can replace them, swap them, etc. and set neck fenders sound cool when you're looking for a change, but certainly aren't legendary, and are few and far between. i prefer my fenders to be bolt on.

epiphone, however, makes really nice set neck guitars, for a really good price. why would you pay half as much, for a guitar that's made crappy (from my experience), and doesn't have the sound or sustain that a true epiphone/gibson has?

i understand you're defending your previous purchases, and you may like them because they are cheap. but you get what you pay for. i have two epiphones with set necks, and i've had several epiphone and maestro LP JR's, and LP specials with bolt on necks. they're fucking crap guitars man. they're not the same as their set neck counterparts, and may be improved upon, but are ultimately cheaper renditions that will never be as nice to play.

you can chalk it up to snobbery, etc, but i've played both, and set necks always sound better, and you generally don't have to do anything to them. this is strictly my opinion, based on the guitars i've owned.

its a fucking solid body electric guitar, do you really think that a .011 mms string has any effect on the vibration of a 40+mm thick body?
especially when it is anchored to a SOLID peice of metal?
sustain comes from pickups, playing style, electronics, amps, and pedals. i swear to god, don't believe me, ask robert benedetto, he is only the foremost archtop builder in the world.

Does that headstock look a little bit off to anyone else?

i do not believe you, sorry. i'm sure that's some kind of faux pas, but as i said, playing a set neck vs a bolt on through the same amp, the set necks always have more balls and more sustain.

take for instance my toronado GT HH that i sold blacktaxi. duncan 59 in the neck, pearly gates in the bridge, which is the same configuration as my gothic les paul (after i put them in, mind). they sounded identical through my vox, but the les paul would ring out significantly longer, and sounded better through distortion, and fuzz than the toronado did. sure it has to do with pots, and wiring, and tuners, and fretboard type, but i find it hard to believe that set necks don't contribute to sustain, whatsoever.

so you just admitted that the pups were different, and the setup was different, good job on proving your point.

i really wish i still had my red epiphone wilshire...

i would stand next to the melody maker, strum both at once and you would get different lengths of sustain on each one each time.

no, actually. i admitted that the pickups were the same (exactly the same, the toronado gt hh is basically a les paul with a bolt on neck, and 6 inline tuners).

so have you measured the string to pup distance, are the strings the same size?
i have kept pretty calm about this debate the last few years, but now, im maintaining that a set neck les paul vs. a bolt on les paul do not have a different sound.
i once heard a guy talk about the vintage silverburst les pauls and how they had more sustain becuz of the metal flake in the paint, and he wouldn't even pay attention to that fact that a 30 year old pickup and cap drift a bit from the og settings which makes it sound different.
