This is what I envisioned when they announced the iPad. A good easy to use platform for performance based music programs.

iPad is a piece of garbage. Someone very excitedly showed me one the other day, and all I could think about was how much better my cheap laptop could do everything she did.

When these things come down aand cost less than two physical electribes, and get a multitasking os, I want one. Ever sice I started making music I've wanted the blend of software sound power and a tactile interface. Even better if it's gestural as well. So far the drum machine apps for iPhone are sucking it pretty hard though.

The lack of multitasking is what totally kills it. That and no USB ports or optical drive.

I could imagine using something like this to watch movies, but there are three fatal flaws. The first is multitasking; I watch a lot of older foreign films, so I need to be able to pause the movie and look up different references and such online. The second is no VLC player, which is invaluable for fixing AVI files, adjusting the aspect ratio of miss-compressed files, and lining sound and subtitles up with the video. The third is no convenient way to get the movies on the thing; there's no USB and by the time I stick it in that little stand to get USB, I might as well just use a real laptop. Yes, I know I can link it with a Netflix account, but that's just another fee on top of the internet access.

As-is, the iPad is garbage and anyone who buys one deserves the harshest scrutiny.

As for the laptop comparison think again. A device like iPad with its touchscreen interface can virtually become any fucking other device lime electribe, a dj mixing console, or even an akai mpc - imagine that, and of course u can use it by actually touching the - virtual - buttons, not some key on the keyboard that represents each function. The possibilities will be endless

There's only one possibility I really care about: can I type something on it? And I don't mean like a little tweet, but a real 500+ word composition. No, I can't. Not without the $70 keyboard dock. Fuck that.

So some DJ will run some program on it, big whoop. Is it really opening any doors here? And how hard is it to remember some keyboard shortcuts? If it's really that big a problem, get something like this:

There's a reason touchscreens didn't become the industry standard a decade ago: fingerprints. It's just that simple. People's dirty fingers belong on an interface, and what you're working on belongs on the screen.

GOD APPLE SUCKS SOOO MUCH.

touchscreens never gained any steam because of loads of reasons and i honestly don't think fingerprints were it. i used an older windows XP tablet PC and just thought "this is stupid why don't i just use a mouse". apple came along and put some thought into a touchscreen interface for the iphone and now they're all over the place.

i'm not interested in the ipad but i am sort of interested in a windows 7 tablet like the HP slate.

I like touch screens. I always felt that the mouse was a kind of stop gap device. You know how many times I've been backseat driving on a computert and been like "click the... The fucking... The oblong slider thing... The fucking... This one!" and then stabbed the attack slider on a softsynth or something? The mouse is like a little arrow that pretends to be your finger.

yeah, something like a real computer with a real OS would be cool with a touch screen. like a laptop with a keyboard, all the ports and drives, a fully fledged OS and a touch screen; that would be cool. it's not the touch screen that makes the iPad crap, it's that it's limited in every single other function besides the touch screen.

If I had an iPad, I'd use a cheap, raw sausage to press the buttons forever.

I guess I assumed it had some sort of ports or drives. Fuck that man. Needs USB at least.
