Right so I found this Mustang on Craigslist. Here are the specs:

1964 Fender Mustang
- Vintage 1st year Fender Mustang
- original finish – white w/ checking
- original tuners
- Neck stamped ’64, original vintage frets, short-scale [A-width, which is my thing]
- 1 original pickup (black), 1 newer pickup (white)
- tremolo replaced with stoptail bridge, note holes under bridge in picture
- Vintage case
- perfect for indie/garage rock sound, total vibe guitar, with awesome single-coil tone
- This is a player’s guitar - probably not for the collector.

The pics are too small to be useful.

Asking price is $1000, which I think is kind of silly for all of the modifications done (the bridge in particular). What'd be a more realistic offering price?

$500 max. is what i'd offer. Ive seen lots of vintage stangs latly selling for chump change.

Also ask if the original tremolo bridge is included. I wouldn't drop that much especially if it cant be returned to stock. You may not want it, but it's not worth as much to me without the original tremolo.

It looks changed; after 36 years, that can't be a big surprise considering they were cheaper guitars way back when.

it looks like a nice enough parts guitar, that neck is probably really nice, but prolly not worth a grand. It's hard to say though because '64 mustangs are the most valuable, being the first year for mustangs and pre-cbs. so even just going on the value of the neck it could be worth close to that much. it's hard to say though.

Lots of Fenders are worth a grand... not a single one of them in guitar terms, but that's irrelevant. Some of those Pokemons are worth a lot too.

he says the duo bridge is screwed onto the trem cavities. I'd simply ask what is a unaltered 64 Mustang worth, and what would it cost to "restore" this one? What would you pay for a vintage pickup and cover and a vintage Bridge/tremolo unit, thimbles and trem bar included? Then simply deduct that. I 'd say from that pov the price may be justified, it's not refinished, and the overall condition seems ok. But then, that's from a european sight of vintage guitar pricing. You may be able to track down such a guitar cheaper. Though 700, 800 $ paid is often seen for much more violated guitars from much less desirable periods.

ALL OF THIS and it's 46 not 36.

I have had plenty of guitars 36 years and older without changed parts or stupid changes so that's not a real excuse.

Not even close to a grand. Maybe $600 or so. It's certainly not worth much more than that.

$500 would be moy offer if i was really really GASsing hard for a duo sonic, which is what that is, the neck looks like it got a really bad decal change done on it to me.
