Guys, been watching fleabay for a while for fender cyclones and i've always preferred the later model with the 3 single coil pups.
Thing is,i've seen a couple of early cyclones lately and been tempted (the first one with the humbucker and single coil) but put off incase it sounds too much like my jagstang (bar the reverse phasing etc).
Has anyone any experience with the early cyclones?

I'd go and play it if I were you, and make up your mind that way.
A lot of people reckon that a big part of the Jag-stang's tone comes from that bridge, and that a different bridge will sound, well, different. I dunno if I'd buy a new guitar based on that, but if I could hear a difference that I liked, then I might.
I also really want one of the three pickup Cyclones (that was the Cyclone II wasn't it?).

Ye, they look really,really cool.
Just read this off wiki:
The Cyclone was also promoted as a USA-made guitar for a brief time in 2000. The US Cyclone featured two dual-coil ceramic Vintage Noiseless single-coils and a modern 2-point synchronized vibrato with stainless steel saddles. The Custom Cyclone had similar features, but used two Gold Lace Sensor pickups with black covers and a custom vintage 2-point tremolo bridge with bent solid steel saddles. Both guitars were made at the Fender Custom Shop. These American-made Cyclones were gone at the end of 2001.
I thought all cyclones were mexican - anyone got any pics of these USA made cyclones?

They're cool and all... but I don't see the purpose when you could buy a mustang RI for less and get a better bridge/trem.

Yeah, the other configurations make a lot more sense to me but even then, Cyclone II is the only one that actually offers anything unique.

Meh, I don't think strat trems are any less efficient than most other trems, let alone the most finnicky vibrato unit ever designed.
In fact, aside from my jag/jazz trems, my strat and jagmaster function best out of all my guitars.

My favorite line is when he talks about how the ladies love the competition stripe. I love this guitar, but I can't get over the horid placement of the pickup selector switches. Did no one during the development process have enough courage to say the switches are too close to the strings.

To be honest, I was fully expecting this to be a problem seeing as I'm a neck strummer and a rather energetic one at that. I did reverse the switches so that down is on in preemption against an issue that's never really come up, at least, any more frequently than on any other lower bout switching guitar I've owned.
I guess my action is a bit high, so the switches aren't in the pick's direct flightpath but it's simply gonna come down to how you strum in the end.

agreed. i'd only want the cyclone 2 cos the triad of jag pickups just strikes me as the yayrad. otherwise it's just a mustang with a strat trem to mine eye.

I will always have a soft spot with these as it was my first experience with offsets.

In my honest opinion if I were to pick between a Jagstang and a Cyclone I might right now have to pick a Jagstang just because it's a Jagstang . But what's nuts is that I think a Humbucker / single coil Cyclone sounds and plays better than a Jagstang . What I would probably wind up doing is first buying a Jagstang and then buy a Cyclone short after . I always do silly stuff like that .

With a fatter squarer body. I had a Cyclone and I hated it . It's like a worst hits of the Strat and stang. My mate I gave it to likes it, but he's never compared it to am OG Mustang.
