Big Muff troubles...

I have a bi muff pi w/ tone wicker (I have it: Tone switch off and wicker on) and I use it as my main distortion but the dreaded lack of mid range is really starting to piss me off in a mix sense. As soon as i click it on... no one can hear what the fuck I'm playing...

So I was wondering if any of you knew of any pedals that can emulate that big muff beefyness while still retaining mids... I like the look of the way huge swollen pickle...

Swollen Pickle reissue is pony by all accounts. You could do far worse than picking up that IC Muff that timhulio is selling in the Classifieds, or try a silicon tonebender. Or just turn your pedal up some more.

Yeah... I was also looking at the modded Green Big muff that mike made for dots with the mids knob... Do IC Muffs have more mids?

I'm not too clued up on the different types of muff...

If you want more clarity and mids I'd just get a thick sounding distortion like a Turbo RAT or something.

Try keeping the tone dial in the first quarter- while you do lose some 'cut', you get some nice low mids back. This has been the only way I've ever been able to use any Muff.

And then buy a RAT.

at the moment i just cut out the tone circuit and that sounds amazing but i shall try your tone setting out. If i was to get a rat. Which type would you suggest?

yeah 160euro here so more pricey than in the states. crush the button had them on their website but no longer in stock...i think they sell pretty well ?
blackout make a double pedal with both the fix'd fuzz and musket in one pedal but it's hella exspensive.

another fuzz i think seemed very promising (haven't seen it at shops here so haven't tried) is Fuzzgod by red witch but it's less like a big muff sound, musket really has lots of big muff characteristics, fuzz god is less distortionish which i love in that musket..metalz chuggz sounding tight.

Hmmmm, I find with the wicker switched on, I get a decent amount of mids. Try what doog suggests turn on the tone and dial in some mids??? Failing that, go with the RAT.

big difference between rat and big muff type sound...if the big muff sounds great to you but just the issue of the mids then don't automatically opt for a rat but look for other companies that make big muff style distortionish fuzzes maybe with more control to dial in more mids, the focus knob on musket is also really cool. or put an equalizer on your board... but i've never done that so no idea if it solves the issue..... just that it's stupid people saying 'oh you aren't happy with the big muff in a band setting...get a rat' ...first of all both sound different, second there 's different types of muff and rats... it's just too easy to call it a solution.

Really, no suggestions of an EQ pedal yet? Okay, I'll be that guy then.

When I use my Big Muff NYC reissue, I put a Boss GE-7 (although, a Dano Fish & Chips or any other EQ will obviously work) after it in the chain and season to taste to better fit in the mix.

An EQ pedal is truly an under-appreciated piece of gear.

it is. i'm the same, i've never bothered to buy an eq pedal but when recording i EQ the shit out of tracks to make it sound better.

Sounds good... and thanks kim, I'm this close (-----) to spending loads of money on a musket thanks to you :)
