building my own amp

I just signed up for a class at a local guitar shop in raleigh called Guru Guitars to learn how to build my own amp. For $450 all the materials are covered to build a 5 watt tube amp that I get to keep after the class is done! And at the end of it, they say I'll know enough to mod existing amps as well as building my own from scratch. I'm so psyched for this! I'll definitely post pics and demo's when I'm done!

I, for one, will not be satisfied until you have built a 3000 watt amp.

I'm joining a physics research program (I'm an English major) where we tear down schematics talk a little about the physic properties behind it then build a clone of any amp we choose. I'm trying to find an amp I want to build. I'll probably build a bassman amp.
Oh and the beauty of thing - it is no credit, which means no cost, I pay for the tubes and the University covers everything else! So basically, I'm going to get a Vintage Fender Replica for $150 or so.

Classes like this are great! In the last few years I've been seeing more and more of these offered. I wish they had stuff like this when I was starting out. If they did, I never heard about it.
Maybe I wouldn't have got that huge ZAP! back in '84 that made me see stars and has had me freaked out on high voltage since.
I still get chills when I think about it.

I think what we're building is basically a clone of the old Fender tweed deluxe amps. I'll definitely post a demo when I'm done! I've already started looking for places to buy parts, and have found places that supply the parts to build bassman clones, so that might be my first project after the class is done.
