Bass setup?

Post by DGNR8 »

So I am gluing this 62 Gretsch bass neck and seem to be close to having something playable. wTF kind of action am I looking for? I know bass strings are going to vibrate in wider arcs, so I would expect higher action. I think the bridge may be too high, for starters.

I like my bass action like I like my guitar action: as low as it gets without buzzing. Generally I feel there's not much difference between setting up a bass and setting up a guitar. Certainly it's possible to get super low action on a bass.

Why do you think the bridge is too high? If the action progressively gets higher as you look down the neck from the nut, then that might be true...but if that's the case you can probably fix it with a good shim.

I haven't gotten that far yet. I just glued on the neck and am hoping I got the setup right (although now's a good time to figure it out). Meanwhile I don't even have tuners yet. That was the one part I had to buy. I was waiting to make sure I could fix it first.

Oh, and strings. Whoops! I want a percussive, sharp sound, but am also open to flat strings. I better do some homework.
