You'll be able to get bone easy enough if you're thinking of making one. Usually you can get a pack of blanks on ebay somewhere.

Nothing wrong with plastic nuts, at all. They're actually more durable than bone in the long-term because they don't become porous and brittle as fast.

Vintage Fender were bone, AVs are plastic-based synthetic "cyclovac" which is pretty close to bone (they label the blanks of it they sell 'bone' which has caused much confusion as to what they actually use on higher-end guitars... it's all plastic).

Having used bone and plastic nuts on Fender/Squier AND Gibson/Epiphone I'd say there isn't much difference. Filing/cutting the bone nut for my tele The Colonel reminded me of being at the orthodontist and then I got a bit queasy. As long as you have a well-cut nut, little short of locking clamps will be much of a departure (even using a brass Gibson nut on my SG didn't feel too different from the plastic and string saver tusq/trem ones I've also used on that guitar).

I put a bone nut on my tele just 'cause, hey, I'm open to hype. I can't feel a difference and CERTAINLY can't hear one.
