Which one to get?

Old new news!

I'm getting a new bassamp, thanks to a premature inheritance*. It has to be cheap, because I have to save up money for next spring. Yet, it has to have at least 300 watts of rampaging solid state powah! (the Novoselic Factor, the N.F. short). So far I've found two (2) contenders!

BEHOLD!

Cab suggestions welcome, should be a 4X10, not too expensive but decent. 4 ohms. I was thinking this:

Image
Peavey 410 TVX EX 4 ohm. Heavy as hell, but that's what lackeys are for.** 298€

*My 95 year old great-aunt(?) put some money in a long term account way way back, though to herself "I'll probably be dead by June 2010". Well, she's still around. But the money is mine! Best inheritance ever!
** Lackeys come with the IMPERATOR, not the Laney. With the Laney I carry the whole shebang, because I'm not made of money.

I've played a gig through a Laney just like that before. I thought it sounded great, but it made my jazz bass w/ active EMGs sound incredibly bright. I just couldn't dial it out. Might have been the cab though. Have you considered the GK Goldline series?

when we were shopping around for a bass amp we tried the laney and weren't that impressed, collectively (we got an ashdown MAG300 instead). tried them out through that 4x10 too, strangely enough. it was nice but indeed weighs a ton.

2. Laney RB9, 300 watts, yet again. only the head. Not the combo. 273 €. Probably not so good with guitar, but whatevs. Should be decent, though.
I think I was using that exact same bass head with my guitar for a Casa Bonita (low tunings and octave pedal fun) practise last week, sounded pretty good and the EQ was tweakable enough to make it sound more like a guitar amp.

Looks like a cousin of the amp J from Sell Crazy uses. Laney make SOLID stuff.

I used to have that Peavey cab, It sounded like crap and it felt like it was made out of lead and concrete. It is easily twice the size of just about any other 410 I have ever come across. I do not recommend it.

I have never heard of that first amp, but have heard nothign but good things about Laney amps from everyone I've ever known that has owned one.

If the IMPERATOR (the only way to say it) doesn't rip me a new one with it's pure unadulterated awesomeness, I'll get the Laney. When I get the money.

Still looking into different cab options!
