I just picked up a 1979 Fender Musicmaster last week off of ebay. I really like the guitar. It doesn't seem to have gotten much use because it's in really good condition. The white color has started to fade into a cream kind of color. The only thing that I have against it is the smell...haha...mildew. I think someone kept this thing in their basement or attic because it reeks. I've cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and the smell lingers. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this thing to stop smelling?

*Never knew how fat the neck on these things is...interesting but I prefer mustang skinny neck to this one; will take some getting used to.

what's going on with the gap between the bridge and the pickguard? is it usually that big and i've just never noticed?

yeah. laziness on fender's part when they changed the musicmaster to the bronco style.

Yeah, it looks kind of stupid. I wonder, is it possible to add a mustang pickguard and metal plate to it w/out issues? I know the holes won't match up...but will they fit otherwise?

you could, but you'd be better off selling it on and buying a mustang if you don't like it. if you start mucking up a previously untouched vintage guitar you won't get much love round here. different if it's been butchered already.

although, if you did decide to do it i've got a spare black 70s musicmaster II pickguard (the mustang shape) that i may be persuaded to part with...

I can't really imagine doing anything to the musicmaster. It's, again, in extremely good shape. I think the only thing I would consider doing is replacing the neck with a mustang neck and putting the actual neck away in storage in case I felt like selling the entire guitar later on.

If you ever want to part with the neck, let me know. I have a 1978 Fiesta Red Musicmaster that needs one. And a vintage bridge too.

My '78 mustang neck is like that. I have a '77 musicmaster neck though that's comparatively much thinner, it's one of my favorite necks I've ever played.

hmmm... I think maybe if you just play it a lot it will go away eventually.

I have noticed a lot of late 70's musicmasters on the forum here lately. Haze is almost done with his '78 musicmaster and my project is also a 1978 as well.

I had a telecaster thinline that smelt of tobacco when i bought it, but the only thing that got rid of it was playing it for ages! Hope it stops stinking cause that's one beautiful axe.

I suspect to get rid of the smell you will have to dismantle it and clean it inside and out.
