Washburn Idol

Post by arcadedave »

I played one today, and quite enjoyed it. I then realised I'm not sure I've ever seen them discussed pont' the scale. I played the WI45 model in red to be precise;

Any opinions? I didn't get a chance to plug it, pushytillmonkey wanted to close. I've been hunting for a twin humbucker stop-tail thing to replace the BCR that went to Franbo.

My friend has one, not sure which model but its flashy with Duncans, Buzz Feiten system, Piezo and Grovers. Really nice guitar, reminds me of a modern day Ibanez Artist. There was an old sought after Washburn model similar to this called the 'Hawk' which it may be loosely based on.
I think they've won several 'Best Buy' awards in some guitar magazines (if memory serves me right).

I've never been a real Washburn fan, and I really don't like how the idol looks. However apart from that they play well and from what I've heard are really reliable.

I almost like the shape, but I dunno, something puts me off slightly. But I like the furnishings, that one has all the bits Fran mentioned.

I hate putting guitars into genres, but I look at it and cant help think 'nickelback' or someone similar.

I totally agree, I think it just looks too tame.

My dad has a WI 67pro. Very similar to the one you played (it has an f hole). It's a really well put together guitar. plays really nice too. Some nice Duncan pickups.

It's just like this one:

I think he's looking to sell it actually.

Lets face it, thats enough to put anyone off.

I've tried to get past that hang up over the years. Like the Mockingbirds and BCR in general, straight away you think of Slash or a ton of Metal bands (that i dont particularly like). In fact i cant place anybody i like that uses BCR other than Kerry King and his V is awful. If you like the guitar i dont think its important who uses one as long as you make good music with it.

Dave. You need THIS.

Even though I can't stand the way B.C. Rich's look, I'm pretty sure that I will have one on day. The same day that I learn to make sooper dive bombs and shred with the best of 'em. And they are cheap and ugly, which usually turns all kinds of things on with me. I'll probably do a "Kiss Me Deadly" cover with me rolling all over with the guitar in a wig and skimpy 80's clothing.

At least the washburn didn't have ABALONE in it. I hate abalone more than anything (almost). I agree on the nickelbacky-thing.

Not even as mini dot markers? When they're subtle.

No. It's the visual equivalent of someone scratching their nails against a blackboard, only amplified.

Given that kinda configuration is pretty common the aesthetics would sway me elsewhere in this case... I'm sure on all practical levels its great but don't dig the visuals.

Fair enough, I've always liked it when its done in small amounts. Abalone block markers are an entirely different story though.

I dont think anyone else offers that spec for that money though, not even Cort or Yamaha.

Anyway, if its just about looking cool get a Spongebob Strat Dave..

I only like the ones that look like this (but not relic'd, I don't know whats going on here)

There was an ad with these running a long time in GP.

I think one of the tone controls is an active thingie or one of those traynor doo-hickeys.

That's all SG, baby. Thing looks like it would rock my socks off. The first one in the thread is the one that looks like a Les Paul.

I was very tempted by one of these awhile ago, I could have rocked it onstage for a punkier song just for laughs.
