I wondering which configurations of the standard Mustang switches result in hum-cancelled performance.
Is this right?
HUM CANCELLED
Both on
Both out of phase
Neck on, Bridge out of phase
Neck out of phase, Bridge on
HUM PRESENT
Neck on, Bridge off
Neck off, Bridge on
Thanks.

as you've put it, only both on in phase, or both on out of phase. although that's not entirely accurate as the phase thing is a little more complicated than that.

What you have there appears correct. Whenever both pickups are activated, the hum should go away.

It's only for certain ones, I don't think the Japanese Mustangs have reverse wound p/ups and are therefore not hum cancelling. Unless I'm just wrong.

well, the switches effectively reverse the winding. so you should always be able to get some kind of hum-canceling setting no matter how the pickups are wound. you can have a set of pickups both wound the same way or a set with one of them reverse wound and you will be able to get the same sounds but you will have to switch in different directions to achieve those sounds.
on my mustang the hum canceling is only when they are both switched the same way. I assume this is what he means by "both on" or "both out of phase". if they are switched in opposite directions so you get that honky "out of phase" sound, they are both on, yet do not hum cancel. it in fact doubles the hum.
