Currently i am in the process of selling a jazzmaster to fund a vintage jaguar (64 model), and was wandering what the output and sound of the vintage jaguar pickups are like?
I play in an alternative/grunge rock band and need something which will handle some mild to heavy overdriven tones, can vintage jaguars handle higher gain outputs well?

Hey, welcome. Gentle is not nearly as fun. Vintage is ALWAYS better at least once. I can't answer about teh sondz. I would say YES.

I've just transplanted some SD antiquities into one of my jags, they are exact spec to vintage pickups, and aged accordingly. THey even have the cloth insulation.
They are really nice sounding pickups, and work lovely with a bit of gain. I have a Blackstar HTDistX pedal, and if I have the guitar cranked up, it does squeal with feedback when you're not playing. But once playing commences, they do handle it well. Just no good for songs with a lot of stops in as they'll just squeal like hell for every single gap.

download the file in this thread and have a listen, then decide for yourself if you can hear a grand's worth of difference.
i can't, but i don't buy guitars purely for how they sound.
I hear a huge difference between the vintage and japanese bridge pickups. the vintage are so much warmer and clearer

I have a vintage Jaguar, I've played a bunch of CIJ etc Jaguars and also owned a CP Jaguar.
CP Jaguars have hot overwound pickups, they have a strong midrange and sound nothing like other Jaguars really.
CIJs are really bright and sound a bit tossy and weak on the Bridge pickup.
My '66 is more mellow (although it's still bright - it is a Jaguar after all) but low output, so don't expect it to be a gain machine. Only you will know what is to your taste and what matters to you.
