I bought a set of these from Musician's Friend and they're useless. One of them the part you lift wouldn't move until I poked it through, and with both of them when they're 'locked' it's quite easy to take the strap off. The insert part doesn't insert very far at all. So I'm going to return them.

What I'm wondering is if these are the exact same as the ones as the schaller ones (with some Fender logos stamped underneath) or if I should go for something different. I have some time before they're necessary (still need to paint) but I'd like to find and buy some.

Also, is there a good alternative?

I have no qualms with my Dunlop strap locks, if that helps at all.

I cut off the leather/plastic bits from the end of the strap, put a bootlace through, and tie it round the strap peg. You can get it tight and it won't ever come off.

It might look a bit ropey, but I don't mind. You also don't have to worry about the strap being twisted, it sorts itself out.

I've bought 3 sets of Schaller-brand (non-Fender) straplocks aftermarket (in the late 90s and early 00s) and never had a problem with any of them, though as you say the insert doesn't insert very far so I always tighten them on the straps in a way that they "cup" the strap button at all times with the open part facing up towards me. Still, very rare they actually slip. Can't comment on Fender stock ones as I never bought a guitar with them. I fitted the Schaller ones to my Jaguar, Jagstang and AV '57 Strat when I first got each of them.

I don't like how many Fenders come with this style stock now as straps without the Schaller attatchment screwed to them don't secure to the little strap buttons very safely, nor can you use the straps on other guitars when they have the Schaller bits tightened on them. Same goes for Dunlop iirc, this is mainly why I don't fit guitars with Straplocks anymore and just use those little rotatey cup things that go on top of the stock buttons like washers and then swivel into a locked position over the strap. They're real light duty but so cheap that they only need to save your guitar's ass once each, like one of those get-you-home spare wheels for a car.

Man, i once jumped off a Multi-Storey car park roof during a solo spinning my guitar round my body 17 times with Schaller's. I landed on my head but the guitar was okay.

I use them, generally. But why would you? I dont recall seeing you post pictures up of yourself jumping into a sea of people at gigs.

I was going to get the Schaller then saw the Fender were slightly cheaper and came with the white and black felt washers so I tried those. Some people say they're made by Schaller and they look extremely similar but maybe not.

I've looked at Schallers on other guitars at Doogfest type events and that, and they've always seemed solid. These not so much. With everything tightened it's not that great a fit and a slight tug in the right direction is enough to disconnect it. The strap would be more secure with standard strap buttons than these. I do wonder if I got some that for whatever reason were badly made. When I pull the little lever up it goes quite far into the housing, further than it extends when in the attached position.

I'm tempted to buy the Schaller as I prefer the look to the Dunlop, but I think I'll just get either standard ones and stick a washer over the top (either the black disk pictured, the grolsh rubber or maybe a standard metal one) or buy the Dunlop. Probably the Dunlop.

I never liked the Dunlops on account of their size. I think they've made them smaller since I was in the market for locks but the Dunlops used to put the strap like, an inch away from the guitar.

That pic dezb1 posted were the things I was talking about using now. Not as elegant as Schallers or Dunlops but moreso than Grolsch washers (which I used before those).

ends sent me a planet waves strap with locks, and it works great.
i only use it when i have to play trumpet and guitar in the same song.
