Hello everyone. I recently decided to bring on a new project and thought I'd share it with you. I picked up a project Squier Super-Sonic for $200. Its got some work that needs to be done, but it has a pretty good starting point. This is my first shortscale and I'm stoked about it.
The guy who i bought it off tried to do a sonic blue nitrocellulose paint job on it. I haven't decided if I should repaint it or keep it because I acutally like the way it looks a little banged up. Plus its going to be getting gigged and banged up anyways.
I do have a question though. I've been doing as much research as possible for pickups and I think I've decided on GFS so save a little bit of money. I play mostly Indie Rock, Heavy Rock, (Brand New - The devil and god are raging inside me) type stuff. And I want to do a similar setup to JB TH-4 in the bridge and a Jazz model SH-4 in the neck. What would be a similar setup for GFS. Crunchy humbuckers in the Bridge and Alincos in the neck? I'm lost.

You are living the dream. That's not a bad deal. I saw a parts SS for for almost $400 the other day. I like the color combo. If you are happy with the paint, just leave it. Are you doing the two volume knob setup like a typical SS? Any humbuckers should be fine. I plan to build a Super-Sonic in the near future.

Personally I'd go for a set of the humbucer sized mean 90's or the retrotrons. I have had both and they are great pups. That said, I am not sure they fit exactly what you are looking for.

I believe the Fat PAT/Crunchy PAT is equivalent to the Jazz/JB set.

I have the Crunchy PAT in the bridge of my SS, it's pretty close to a JB and half the price. I don't have a neck pickup in mine so I can't comment there, but I will vouch for the Crunchy. My SS is my favorite guitar.
And yeah the paint is awesome. Great find.

Update: So I'm starting to get worried here. According to the tracking number the shipment is still being initiated (As of Monday 10/14), so I called Fedex to see what they heck is going on, and the CSR said that although the electronic shipping infomation has been sent for a pickup, the "shipper" hasn't provided a pickup date yet. She didnt' really sound like she knew exactly what was going on so I'm hoping its just being slow as hell to update. I emailed the seller, so hopefully I'll hear back from him soon.

get that thing to a luthier/tech asap and have those things leveled and crowned!

Who was organising the carriage? Were you paying FedEx to pick up?

I got it sorted finall. Guess the guy was sending out two packages and only set the actual pick up date on one. there's currently a supersonic in box in a trailer somewhere in Oregan. Don't steal it!

Well she finally came in today. I'll get more pictures up as soon as possible but I may or may not have encountered a problem. I'm going to need some new saddles so I figured I'd buy a set, but I don't know which ones to get. I see that they come in different widths. I was going get an american set (
http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=361261) but I don't know if they'll be too wide. Any help is appreciated.

the super sonic does have a strat bridge so those saddles should be fine. If in doubt measure them.

This is the first time I've really looked at a super sonic, it is kind of cool but I'd like it better the other way up, which I 'spose is quite close to a toronado's shape

You need saddles still? My parts Super-Sonic came with everything but I'm not using the bridge. I'm filling the cavities and making mine into a coral / fiesta red esquire (with left-hand tele bridge).
I suppose that I should start my own thread on this...

I forgot to comment on the pickups.
Assuming that you are using the same pickguard and are filling it with humbuckers, my white Super-Sonic has Dimarzios (a PAF neck and a Tone Zone bridge), and it sounds amazing. I have push-pulls on the two volume pots to split the coils (eight tones). My silver Super-Sonic has P-Rails, which is fun, too. Twelve tones on that one. If I find another white one, I'm putting in gold TV Jones Power'Trons and making it a White Penguin SS ( I already have the pickguard).
But that would be # 6, which would be greedy.
