i'm posting this as a kinda follow up to the dream gear threads that we've posted before.

so how far have we got, shortscale?

I don't think I have a dream rig, theres too much stuff I want.

Realistically I'm just a few pedals away from something I'm happy with, a nice strobe pedal tuner and maybe a couple of fuzzes, a Line 6 DL4 and a volume pedal.

I'd kill for an axe-fx ultra though. I also really want an Orange 212 cab with black tolex and some Weber blue dogs for my Vox.

In my current situation: Yes.
Strat>Wah>DS-2>Tuner>Guest Appearance Dirt Box (currently Fuzz Face)>Laney Head>4x12 Cab.

guitar-wise, i'm definitely there (except for my irrational hankering for a tele, but that's no biggie). pedal wise, essentially i'm happy with my general palette. i'd like to have some better amplification in future, maybe a big matamp or something, but i think at this stage i'm doing ok.

Yep, pretty much. I can keep it really simple and always have a smile on my face.

I really need to take a photograph of the stuff all setup as I use it, but it is:

Pretty much, I would like to have a love buzz of my very own, and a cab to rock it with, but as far as my stage/recording presence goes, I'm set. Although my drummer stole my POG for his synth work, so I'd like to replace that.

Good lord, yes. I have way too much stuff and a passable example of just about everything I'm into. It's almost embarrassing.

When it comes to gear in general though (not just guitar stuff), I'll probably always be buying little odds and ends because every purchase leads me to new conclusions about what I'm after. I buy a mic preamp and decide it would sound better with a nicer mic. Then maybe that new mic needs to be picking up a nicer sounding amplifier. Haha.

I used to have my ideal setup, but had to sell it all.... It was:

Taylor T-5>line 1 to PA for acoustic tones----Line 2>Boo Tu2>Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive>SIB Varidrive>OCD>Small Clone>Trex REplica>GigFx Chopper>ABY>Orange TT and Silverface Bassman 70.

It was a pretty killer setup that could cover 100X more than I ever knew how to play....I only used this full setup when we played larger clubs though. On a normal gig it would have been the t5 split to the PA and the pedal board through 1 amp.

I'd like a different flavour amp. Love my Bassman, but maybe a AC30 or an Orange down the line. I love amp dirt and I haven't found a pedal that feels like an amp. The bassman can get there but my bandates don't appreciate the volume as much as i do.
Fixing to change up my pedals in a big way so I'll see where that takes me.
And some nice recording gear. Mics, preamp, decent enough pc/mac to run the brains of it all.

Bassman and A TT is an awesome setup... Get a split cab so you can run 1 into each side (so there is only 1 cab to haul).... It is a lovely setup..

Jazzmaster or Duo Sonic --> Behringer VT999 and/or Fredric Harmonic Perc. --> Twin Reverb

In my other Band

Tele or Esquire --> Fender Reverb --> (there's room for improvement here) --> Ampeg J-20

I'm still searching for the ideal "mild" dirt/boost to throw in here. I tend to use a cheap Danelectro overdrive and for lead stuff the saltbooster. But the Dano is not ideal. The Harmonic Perc. works too in softer settings, but sometimes is too fuzzy for what I want.

doogfest II was the catalyst for switching gear, so 3 years on i'm finally happy with what i've got. i've swapped and changed in the past, mainly to compensate for not having what i wanted in the first place.
mike's tele and thom's rockerverb caused something in my head, which was never right until the purchase of mike's tele and eventuial getting an orange. may not be a rockerverb, but it just as good to me.
pedal wise, i was using all manner of pedals to battle with a brittle, clean amp that was never gonna sound how i wanted it to. now i have the amp i want, the pedals lose context. a boost/od just adds the edge when needed now, instead of being the core drive sound.

there's things that i'm planning to get to finish off. maybe nicer cables. i've been converted to bullet cables, got a good deal on one and it's really nice, though the grenade plugs are a little twee. maybe the smaller pedaltrain boards, just to keep my few pedals neat and tidy.

As far as my bass rig, yes for the most part: P bass and a modified J bass > Sansamp (sends signal to the house PA) > Ampeg SVT 2 Pro > Mesa Powerhouse 1000 cab. My rig sounds absolutely amazing, but I still would love to have an Orange AD200 or Terror Bass head.

As far as Guitar goes, I am nowhere near my dream rig. I'm about to pull a robroe and sell off the majority of my collection cause I have a bunch of guitars that I just don't play anymore, and too much stuff that I want. My dream rig as of now, and it's been this way for a while is : Fender Jazzmaster > Dr Z Remedy head or Orange AD30 > Any nice 2x12 cab (thinking avatar since I love their cabs and they're cheap) I don't use any pedals so I don't really need anything in the way of pedals, I just want a really good rocking amp setup.

I think I've realised that I really like feeling like I have something in my hands that I'm struggling to control, like where there's too much going on and it has to be reigned in. Like trying to hold on to a large amount of water in you hands.

For that reason, I suppose that my ideal set up is what I already have: A big archtop and a dimed 5-watt valve combo right behind me so that notes all bloom and try to turn into bassy howls.

I've found that I can spend all day listening to sounds and tones, though, hence all the dirt pedals I've been getting. I love weird things happening. I tend not to think very much when I play, and rely on fairly decorative gestural type stuff for lead. I like when a set up throws a few surprises in there. That's why I love the Grumbly Wolf. It makes the notes all wrong. It's nice to not know what's going to happen when I play. It hasn't been like that for me for a long time, and I got bored of the instrument because there were no surprises.

So, I suppose I have my ideal set up, but I'll probably always keep expanding. Being enthusiastic about gear and how things work and techy things and knobs and wires and nails and screws keeps me interested too.

I have everything I need + more stuff than what I actually need. This is partly because I was using effects processors and pedals with synths before I decided to give the guitar a go. I'll be selling some of it off in the coming weeks. I just have to decide what is redundant because I'm just now discovering the fun of using pedals together and will be trying to configure the pedalboard over the next few days.

Getting there. Happy with my FX. There are a few things out there I would like (POG, Micro Synth, Freeze) but they are more for messing about with rather then 'need'. Guitar wise, would be nice to have Gibson's rather than Epiphones, American Fenders rather than Mexican, but I like the way all my guitars play which I guess is all that matters. Plan to swap out the pickup's on my Epi Sg 400 to Humbucker sized P90's then that will be a sorted guitar.

Amps, I have a Orange Crush 30R to take round my mates for a jam, Bugera V55 HD (with JJ's in it) and an old Marshall solid state Lead 100 from 1974. Built my own 2X12 cab and shoved Jenson CR12's in there. I like em! Of course it would be nice to have an Audio Kitchen or a 65 Lil Elvis, but do I need them??? No, not really.

I think I'm finally getting close to ideal all I want now is to get a jazzmaster maybe a marshall jcm 800 and reacquire a Boss PS-5
mainly because of the glitchy tracking I can't get from the PS-3.

I remember a thread where I went off about bi-amping and was all like: "Uuuuuuuuuuuuu... That's not a reasonable setup for a gigging musician... unless you're the fucking Edge or something..." Man, what a dick.

My effects and guitars haven't changed all that much but HEY LOOK AT THAT, I'm using two amps simultaneously now.

I'm seriously thinking of getting an Dwarcraft Internet as a surrogate Rat, A Dano Spring King and maybe some manner of delay (possibly the Behringer DD400) for the Lifco side.
