I want to build a 24" scale on a 1963 Duo-Sonic body. I think I read a thread that said some 24" necks will fit. Sound rite? And which ones.

Hey thanks for all the great information here.
I think there is alot of confusion because of the 22.5", 22.7", 24", 24.75", 25.5" scales mixed with the 20,21, and 22 fret necks.


Let me take a cut at summarizing the possible replacements from what I understand but please correct and add where necessary:

1) A 22.5" scale, 21 fret, 50's/60's, Fender duosonic/musicmaster/mustang neck can be replaced by a 24" scale, 22 fret, 50's-70's, Fender duosonic/musicmaster/mustang/jaguar neck.

2) A 24" scale, 22 fret Squier Vista Jagmaster (96-98) or Jagmaster II (02 to 07) neck can be used on a 50's- 70's Fender duosonic/musicmaster/mustang,jaguar body.

3) A 24" scale, 21 fret Squier Classic Vibe Duosonic neck cannot be used on a Fender duosonic/musicmaster/mustang/jaguar body (without leaving a 1 fret space at the bottom of the neck to the body).

4) A 24" scale, 21 fret Squier Classic Vibe Duosonic neck and a 24" scale, 21 fret Squier Jagmaster II (08-10) neck are interchangeable.

5) A 25.5" scale Fender duosonic/musicmaster/mustang/jaguar is possible but using a standard 25.5" scale, 21 fret neck you would need to move the bridge farther from the neck.



Here are a few questions:

Can a 24" scale, 21 fret neck Squier Classic Vibe duosonic or Jagmaster II (08-10) directly replace the 22.7" scale, 20 fret neck on the Squier mini or Fender/Squier MIM/MIC duosonic?

Was the Jagstang a 24" scale, 22 frets, or 24.75" scale, 22 frets, or both?

close but the jagmaster (02-07) neck is 25.5" scale aside from that you are pretty much spot on.

yes, the pre-CBS duo-sonics and musicmasters had 22.5" and I think in rare instances 24" necks (I think?). I do know that the 22.5" necks were still used on the duo-sonic II and music master II, although the 24" neck was far more common and the 22.5" was eventually phased out entirely. anyway, yes all the vintage 22.5" and 24" necks are interchangeable. the modern squier jagmaster, or squier duo-sonic (CV or otherwise) necks will not work on vintage shortscale guitars.

Anyone know if a 96' Jag-Stang neck would fit and intonate?

all of the 22.5" and 24" necks are interchangeable, so yes. a jag stang neck will fit on an old duo/mm/mustang body and intonate at a 24" scale length.

unless the heel is different or something, i've never owned a jagstang.

this is a little misleading; a Jagmaster, which is a 24 inch neck, will not fit those because it is a conversion neck. A true shortscale neck like a vintage jag, mustang, duo-sonic, bronco, etc. will work on the vintage 22.5 but conversion necks like the Jagmasters and Classic vibe duo-sonic RIs, are only interchangeable with other conversion necks and strat/tele scale.

that probably confused anyone who didn't understand more.


edit: a Jagstang neck is a true shortscale, so it fits in the category with the jaguar and mustang.

i've never owned a jagmaster either.

i guess that makes sense, if the master part is just a jazz master.

i think i understand why you can interchange the old style 22.5 and 24.

if the space from the nut to 12th is 11.25 and 12 inches respectively and the 12th fret to the middle of the saddles is the same, then the 22nd fret and the space on the neck after it accounts for the .75 of an inch on that side(bridge) of the 12th fret. if the 1-12 fret difference is always .75 inches longer on a 24"scale and they add a fret on the other side of fret 12 it makes it simple, at least for me to understand.

what I dont get is how that works when you're talking about the 3 scale lengths 22.7, 24, 25.5(correct?).

these type of questions are asked over and over again(nature of message boards, im not complaining or critiquing). but i can't remember reading the math as to why this stuff works.

i had to take remedial math in college and sucked at even that so maybe i'm just making this more confusing than it needs to be.

its the bridge distance. so the jagmaster neck is setup for a 25.5 body to make it a 24 scale instrument.
