New Cabinet Day! (Avatar Content)

So, I just spent close to 30 minutes on a write up about the Avatar, and firefox crashed. Fuk.

I got the Vintage styled Avatar 1x12 for a steal of a price, $100 delivered to my house. These go for a minimum of $270 new, more depending on speaker choice. It is immaculate. I've been playing through it for a bit and noticed it is much brighter than my other cab. Whether this is a result of the Hellatone 30 speaker vs the Jensen C12K (in my other cab), or a difference in the cab/grill cloth, I know not.

I have a few questions regarding power rating and impedance. The Hellatone 30 is 30 watts. The Bassman is 50 watts. Is it safe to run the Bassman into JUST the 30 watt speaker? Do I have a chance of blowing it? Or will it just be quieter than my 100 watt C12k?

I just set up a stack of both 8 ohm 1x12 cabs I have. I have them wired in parallel (or what I think is parallel (2 cables coming from the back of the amp to each individual cab)). The Bassman suggests 4 ohms on the back. When I have them wired this way it is 4 ohms total load, correct? 8/2=4ohms?

If I had wired them in series (one cable coming from the back of the amp, into the Avatar, then a cable out of the other input on the Avatar into the homemade cab), it would end up being 16 ohms [8+8] and fry my Bassman, amirite?? Also, when running them in Parallel like this, does it split the power between both speakers (IE would it but 25w to each speaker, making it safe for the Hellatone 30 to crank the bassman?)

The construction of the Avatar cab is incredible and it looks great. I can see why these are so popular. I would easily pay double what I did for this guy.

I'm thinking that if you guys think I run the risk of blowing up the Hellatone, I'll swap speakers and use the C12K in the Avatar, as it will be my gigging cab (I'm not lugging both of these around unless I can borrow my friends AC50 for stereo delay goodness).

Enough text.. here are some pictures:

Congrats on the price, sounds like a great deal.
Be careful with the Bassman, it depends how loud you turn your amp up, but yes you could blow your 30W speaker.

I definitely wouldn't be running a 50 watt head into a 30 watt speaker! Generally the speakers are rated at least double of the head or even triple like a JCM800 is 100watt head into 300watt quad (traditional set up) or a twin reverb RI is 85 watts into 200 watts of 2x12's (each speaker is 100watts).

Did you match the Ohms?

I said in the original post that I was running two 8 ohm speakers in parallel -- which by my math means that it achieves the desired 4 ohm load.

I'm questioning if running the Bassman into two speakers divides the power load at all, so it would be less dangerous for the Hellatone 30.

You do have to be careful, but it is not uncommon at all to see someone running a 100 watt ehad into a 2x12 with 2 vintage 30's. So it depends on how hard you are going to push it, etc.

You should be in pretty good shape running both cabinets.

Just don't turn the amp up too much or rag it too much,

I run a 500 watt bass head into 2 x 500 watt cabs and that works fine, though I still worry about turning it up too much with lots of distortion and boosts infront of it.

Confusingly Vintage 30s are rated at 60W though, so a 2x12 will be over a 100W amp rating.

Oh -- that means the Hellatones are rated at 60W 30W. They are just pre-broken in Vintage 30s G12H30s.

Afraid that Hellatone 30s are G12H30s and only 30W. It's the Hellatone 60s that are the V30 version.

Craiglist -- they guy was asking $125 which is still batshit crazy low, but he really need the space in his house, so I talked him down to $100, and he drove it to my house.

Score.

A 45 minute drive for him, mind you. (He had to come into town anyway, but still, a good 20 minutes out of his way to deliver it). I'm very pleased.

If you don't go apeshit, you can do it no prob and you'll get speaker breakup earlier than if you were running a higher wattage speaker. This is why 25w greenbacks are popular, people dig the speaker breakup.
