Rondo LP Jr. Options...

Hey guys,

I decided I'm gonna get my self a post-christmas present. I want a Les Paul Jr... or basically a crunchy sounding p90 guitar.

Here are the ones I have come across on Rondo.
I know none of these are actually LP Jr. mostly melodymakers but they are close enough for me.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly: Callisto Don't really like the idea of bolt on neck.

Secondly: Dual pickup Callisto Looks abit better, but still not so nice build quality.

Thirdly: Douglas Melody The bridge looks wacky to me, and I'd have to pay 20 bucks more for a red finish. (also never heard of Douglas, all you guys talk about SX and Agile being the most bought options.)

Fourthly: Agile Melodymaker Kinda looks the best, they have a transparent red version on their ebay page.

Or should I just get this? I figure since it is not mahogany it won't sound as Les Paulish, more Jazzmasterish.
Liquid

My main question is... Is it worth paying 90 bucks more for a melody maker pickguard and a set neck made by Agile as opposed to the SX with a bolt on neck... Isen't the build quality always spotty from these guys?

Agile Melodymaker looks great - any other colours apart from sunburst?

White, White transparent for 10 bucks more, and a red transparent just like stereotypical melodymaker and LP Jr. only on their ebay page... hmmm

Do you really think it is worth paying 330 bucks including shipping for a knockoff melody maker? Or should I just save and buy a Gibson?

I've heard Rondo stuff generally needs refretting and all that.

I have had this same delema for about a yr now and have never pulled the trigger... I have looked at all those guitars and never bought one.....

I am leaning toward a White Epi SG G400 and GFS Mean 90's

I have looked at the Gibsons too, right now there is 2 late 90's Gibson LP Specials on Craigslist for a fair price, $500ish, but those were P100 pickups (stacked hb's) so by time I change to real P90's its more like $700, and SG Classics go for $600ish used but only in red, My main player is a red SG so I would want a different color

if I bought the Agile Jr for like $250 I am sure I would gut it and do new pots, caps and pu's too, so it would put it up around $350, so I am leaning toward a used G400 for about $200, $100 for parts and $35 for pro set up.... still not ready to pull the trigger yet, I just got my JM in Sept...way too soon for a new axe

If I was gonna buy a cheap one off Rondo I think I would just get the Dual Pickup Callisto for $130..... spending $250 just seems silly to me when that is getting into the territory of a better guitar in the used market..

Damn You!!!! now u got me looking at these and thinking about glorious P90's

Within the Rondomusic.com hierarchy the Agile's are the very top of the pack. I haven't compared that particular model to it's counterpart but when comparing my Agile LP to Epiphones of the same price range the Agiles won out.

"I've heard Rondo stuff generally needs refretting and all that." - generally the other lines "may" need additional fret work and a setup. Then again the last 3 SXs I've laid hands on needed no setup work out of the box. The Agile line on the other hand rarely has issues, as they are from a seperate factory and specifically go through additional fretwork processes.

I promise I'm not working for Rondo though, I've just been a member of their forum AgileGuitarForum.com for quite awhile and am a very satisfied customer.

How are the pickups, pots and such on these bad boys?.....the reason I never pulled the trigger is cuz I did not want to buy one new to gut it.....

If I knew the Agile Jr for $250ish was not gonna need anything but a set up I would prolly have one already....

I figure I would be happy with the pickups in there for a month or two and then when have the money buy some cheap GFS pickups... pots are cheap anyways right? A set of p90s from GFS with shipping would be no more then 80 bucks... and pots may not even be neccesary

Also, the dual pickup callisto just has that cheap Epi LP special look, and the cut-away is all sharp and pointy...

The pots on my AL3k (the LP clone) are just as nice any others I've used, smooth with no play in the shafts and they don't seem to roll as freely as some of the cheap OEM ones do. The taper of mine are smooth and even throughout.

The pickups (IMO) are quite nice, the best set I've played (out of 3-4), I'm very tempted to find a 2nd hand set of them to swap into my Toronado. I've heard a few mentions of people swapping them out only to come to the conclusion that the stockers were very competitive in quality to the pricier set.

I was skeptical about Rondo at first too though so I can understand people not wanting to pay just to try them out. If you're in the US, you can return your items to Rondo for only the cost of shipping, so it's really not that large of a gamble. Outside the US though I believe you cannot do an return - which I believe is BS and probably costs a few sales a month.

Do the heritage cherry or the vintage white. They used to have TV yellow but don't have it any more. I have an sx and a douglas. each needed some help. They say the Agiles are a different bag of cats. Like what ODC said about being set up and good frets. Also, if yo don't like it or it has a problem you can have a new one sent.

If you aren't planning touring with that case, or are usually hard on gear I wouldn't recommend their cases. I ordered the black one with the LP I got and while it's nice I just don't think it would hold up to rigorous abuse.

Well thank you... I just liked the look really.

I think the Agile Melody-maker look-alike is too glossy... I still really want a a 2 p-90 LP, and the next one is 25 bucks more and looks like a regular LP... I just love the melodymaker look, but not the gloss on the finish

Lucamo, have you thought about buying a used Epiphone 56 reissue?

This one here: Epiphone

The fact that it is 50 bucks cheaper makes me think something must be wrong with it...
I do like contours though.

And yes I have considered the epiphone, but at that price I would rather save up for a nice model.
