Replacement Pickups

I hate my Gibson Les Paul Std.
It sounds like poo.
I really like my Strat Plus, it came with Lace Sensor Gold pickups which are really low output.
My other favorite is my Tele with a Lil 59'
I don't want to just stick a duncan 59 in my paul. I want something more unique. A little cooler sounding. But nothing with more output than a 59.
What do you think?

You could try an Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbucker, although it does sound a bit silly that you don't want to put a SD 59 in as it's not 'cool' enough despite you liking the sound.

Put a Dimarzio Steves Special humbucker.

The Steves Special is 18K, which is very high output.

There's one in the Benecol/Rhyscaster it's gotta be the tastyist pickup I've ever owned. I would love to have one in the bridge position instead of the neck though. I will cosider doing an 72' Deluxe upgrade to it.
But yeah, I agree with you Ian - the stocks in the LP Stds between 1997 - present are a pile of do-do.
EDIT: Do you have the Burstbuckers or the 490r and 490t? I have the 490s and they aren't that great, the burstbuckers are suppose to be really nice recreations of vintage 57 PAF's and Gibbo buffs rave about them - I'd love to know what you think.

Duncan make other PAF-type pickups:
APH for Slash tones
Pearly Gates for Billy Gibbons tones
The SD forum loves a '59 or Jazz in the neck and some flavor of Duncan Custom (Custom, Custom Custom, or Custom 5) in the bridge. The overwound-PAF Customs are good for rocking.

You like the 59, you don't want something with more output than a 59, get a 59. You basically said you don't want what you want.

Yeah, 18k is some serious shit. BC Rich BDSM's measure in at that and they are br00talz as the Metallers say on the ug.community forum.

I mainly use these guitars for recording. I don't want duplicate sounds is all. No point in having two guitars with bridge pickup 59's.
Great suggestions guys. I'll be checking into some of these!

Not tried the lil '59 a whole lot but I can vouch for the the cool rails which is of a similar output. I clean-ish open sounding humbucker, unlike the JB I had before.
However, you'll need a full size bucker right ?

yes.
I've never tried a dimarzio pickup so I'm curious. But it looks like they are all alnico 5 or ceramic.

DiMarzio do seem to be mostly high gain but the
Air Classics read up well.
I totally get where your coming from here Ian, a decent pickup change can transform your dynamics and inspire a lot of new writing. With 20 years experience (check me lol) my personal favorite is the Humbuckers found in old Yamaha SG's, they are so musical (if that makes sense?). I have an old Yamaha SG and was also lucky enough to fit some in my Flying V. No idea what they are based on, possibly 59 PAF's.
