i love that thread title. the other guitar player in my band wants a new axe. he's been playing some pretty cool cheap-o yamahas for a while. now he wants a "big guitar." not a baritone. i think he's leaning toward solid-body over hollow, but most of the bigger electrics i know are at least semi-hollow. i'm totally blanking on suggestions sans the explorer and the jazzmaster. ideas?

Haha, that image looks shopped. So that's a real Pacifica? Fuck, I'm small and my Strat buries me so that guy must be huge.

As far as big guitars go I think Firebirds are THE biggest most unweildy solid bodies I know of. The extended corners and headstock make it massive. They're great for people who are too tall.

haha. yeah that pic is ridiculous. it's fish-eye so it's man:guitar ratio is a bit skewed. still, he's probably 6'3" or so. firebird is a good suggestion. thanks!

335/dot all come to mind. Semi hollow at least but they are quite large

I'm 6'4", and while baritones probably fit me best, I've never been that bothered by a dinky guitar (I've had a couple of SGs and a LP DC Jr - also had a Jag, but while they're shortscale, they're still physically pretty big). The smallest guitars I've ever had have been regular 25" scale Danelectros, due to the bridge position. If he's definitely sure he doesn't want a hollowbody, then depending on his budget, maybe look at a 335-S - they're 335-sized solidbodies Gibson made in the early 80's? They don't command vintage money (Norlin era Gibson, after all) but the one I played was pretty nice.



The First Act Bambusa will be cheaper, and I think built to similar dimensions (you might want to check this though)



...think Hohner maybe made some guitars around this size too. Otherwise, Jazzmasters, as you've said, are reassuringly mansized - Flying Vs can also look much longer than they are due to the shape - maybe get him to try a V... If it's the depth of a semi-hollow that's putting him off, maybe suggest a Hofner Verythin? Same heft as a 335, but only as thick as an SG: loved the one I played.

i'm 6ft 3 and have no issues with body size to be honest. Even my mustang doesn't seem to small at all.

thanks for the suggestions benecol. i'm not familiar with any of those, and they all look pretty sweet. he did say he wanted something big like a ric, too, so hollow/semi-hollows aren't completely out of the question. i think he just wants to know more bigger solid-bodies since they aren't quite as common as a huge gretsch or something like that.

Les Paul sized, 335 shaped. Love those, and the 339 or whatever it was called (a more recent LP-sized semi in true 335 fashion) because I'm so titchy.

Well I never - I thought it was the same size. Definitely bigger than an LP though...

An Epi Riviera or an Ultra . My Ultra actually has as much with as my Corsair which is Es335 size . And it's like 10-11 lbs so that's a bonus...

For a none gibson semi, I like the look of the hagstrom viking. Not sure if I'd get it rather than a natural finish Epiphone Casino though, they look so nice.

i mean no disrespek, but that guitar is fucking ugly and huge. i'm glad you love it, as truly, that's all that matters. i'm just sorry you had to pay for it.

Try a standard - they've got lovely big necks - one of the biggest of the current production Gibsons (I'm a big neck fan too) - my guess was you played a '61 reissue...

I have an SG Special with a nice big fat ass chunky neck. Which I loved when I first got it, but then the shortscale's turned me to the thin side. Mmmmmm Jagstang skinny neck is just the shit!

In places, but I think the general sizing is far closer to the LP than a semi. They always reminded me of Travis Beans a bit.
