strange sounds from amp head

okay this is weird.
i have a Vox Night Train and i basically can hear my guitar from inside the amp head. it sounds a lot like spring rattling on a tube BUT. this happens even when the SPEAKER IS DISCONNECTED.
don't get me wrong, i run it through an attenuator, which allows me to disconnect cabinet without killing the thing. i do this for quiet recording, the attenuator also has a line out.
the rattling/fizzing noise happens in both 7w and 15w modes, but starts at lower master volumes in 15w mode. it also only happens when i run some kind of fuzz pedal through it. i'm not sure if it was there before, but i noticed it for the first time today.
what the hell is going on? it's scary!
