I figured this might be helpful to some people who like the feel and looks of both guitars, but aren't sure about the differences in sound/can't justify owning both due to some similarities. As you will see they sound pretty different, the Mustang is notably BRIGHTER THAN THE JAGUAR, which I often see being touted as the brightest shortscale. Anyway, hope you enjoy.

Nice vid. Yeah, my Jaguar is quite mellow compared to my Mustang. I think the two have almost nothing to do with each other except that they are both amazing guitars. The Jag is actually a pretty large guitar, from end to end it definitely is longer than a Strat as far as I can tell. The Mustang is a dinky little thing with a golden voice.
I don't think I can pick one over the other. I think it's why until you have both, you can never really truly get over the GAS.

Funnily enough the Mustang is longer than a strat end to end.
Nice vid. Might puck up a Mustang again one day but the Jag is one guitar I love.

nice demo and interesting to hear the difference between the 2 but I wonder how much the novak pups have an affect though compared to the original pups

Yeah. Though the jag bridge is still MIJ.

Lovely tones. Really like how the Stang sounds.

A proper, helpful video - really useful. Great work. Made me want a Mustang, too.

Yeah I was thinking I could make this vid but I don't have stock pickups in either.

Mustang all the way for sound and durability, but definitely Jaguar for looks, they're are just irresistible!
Great video

Excellent work on putting this together. Your demo stuff has been of great quality lately and this is no exception.
I'm not huge on Mustangs, but a great comparison nonetheless.

Definitely a really cool video comparsion. The mustang with both pickups going was a glorious clean sound. Definitely bloated with Stang GAS at the moment. Thanks for that

interesting. i'd say my jag sounds thinner than my duo II, the top end probably fills a similar frequency range. the jag has less bass on the bridge pickup for sure, i think the straight pickups affect the sound quite noticeably. the essential character of both guitars is very similar though (bolt-on-fenderlols).
i'd been meaning to do a wee comparison recording for some time but will most likely never do it, as i'm a lazy, lazy man.

I think it's impossible to do a proper comparison unless you have identical pickups on the two guitars.
But who would do that?
I don't want two guitars with the same pickups.

I think you get a lot more variables guitar-to-guitar with Jags and Jazzmasters than you do with Stangs. I'm always playing Jags that feel way different to mine despite being spec'd identically, whereas most Mustangs I've played have been much closer, like two Teles or Strats of equal spec. There's a lot to the Jaguar of course, to get it fully set-up. I might be picking up borked ones. Worst one I've ever played was pre-CBS, a refinished '63... a definite case of borkage.
