i've been invited to perform the role of Zach de la Rocha/vocalist for a one off (maybe?) tribute show with one of my favorite local bands.
quick backstory:
► Show Spoiler
the lead singer of the band
Making Movies is a good friend of mine, and i've grown to know the band, and watched a lot of their shows in different incarnations. they began doing a cover band gig (minus their latin percussionist) at a bar in downtown, and i have gone and watched that many a times. that band is called
The Dub Kings.
during one of those times about a year ago, i was invited on stage to perform Bulls on Parade, and it was nothing short of epic. we had the hole place (50+) freaking out, on their knees, crying and shit. this happened a few more times, and then we moved onto two songs (with the most recent addition of Killin' in the Name).
after the last time we did this, the bassist Nic (drummer who's been playing with portugalwillie and i) suggested we do an entire set, maybe jokingly. it all sounded like a grand idea at the time because, well, i was drunk as piss and rowdy anyhow.
a few weeks later, a date, and a possible setlist arrived in my inbox, and we just hashed out some details today. Ha! Fruition! it's going to be pretty fun, i have a feeling.

setlist (not in a particular order just yet):
- Bombtrack
- Killin in the Name
- People of the Sun
- Bulls on Parade
- Testify
- Sleep Now in the Fire
- Guerilla Radio
- Down Rodeo
- Know Your Enemy (w/guest vocalist for the maynard bit)
- Snakecharmer/Roll Right/Revolver
- Ashes in the Fall
- Calm Like a Bomb
- Renegades
ENCORE???
- Township Rebellion
- Freedom
i'm quite stoked, and it's a real honor to play with these guys because they are a super tight band, and i really enjoy their music, and they're all pretty phenomenal instrumentalists/musicians.
will post more details as they arise (promo poster should be done soon). April 29th @ Jerry's Bait Shop in Lee's Summit, MO to anyone who wants to cum hang out.

We intended to do this in Derry under the name Guilty Parties but then we all went our separate ways and don't see much of each other any more. Probably just as well, porky Tom Morello wouldn't look right.
Should be awesome fun.

Sounds terrific! Definitely record audio/video on this. I've played some RATM covers sporadically over the years, but to do a full set would be thrilling.

well, the show went off without a hitch, and was a minor success. i did not partake in any of the sweet sauce, and was in rare form.
my backing band (The Dub Kings) performed their normal cover gig beforehand, including a cover of a
Van Morrison track featuring the older brother of our own portugal willie on Sexophone:
the band was super tight, and enrique (guitarist extraordinare) pulled off almost all of the solos in some fashion or other. the one that got him is the old "pull the cable out of the jack and touch it to the humbucker poles all while stroking the wah" bit from
testify. WRHB's don't really get hot or feedback as we'd hoped.
we've been booked for several more shows, and had positive feedback from everyone there (granted most were in various states of inebriation).
final set list:
- Testify
- Killin in the Name
- Guerilla Radio
- People of the Sun
- Vietnow
- Bombtrack
- No Shelter
- Sleep Now in the Fire
- Know Your Enemy
- Down Rodeo
- Bulls on Parade
lots of folks were taking video, and snapping pictures, but i've been too busy to track them all down and compile the good ones. more to come.
here's a blurry one as a teaser (unfortunately from one side to the other, seems to show an even smaller crowd than was there):
