My jag has broken 2 e strings on me at the ball end, a .11 and a .9



(im talking about the sunburst one.)

what the hell is going on? I read about soldering the ball end or using Fender "bullet'' strings. is this the fix? is this a normal jag trem problem?

What kind of strings are you using?

they were both ernie ball slinkys.

Where exactly are they breaking? How much string is left at the retainer/ball end?

The soldering trick is mostly just to help with the stretching process, as the retainer end has some winds that may or may not stretch uniformly during the rest of the process. It's usually more of a problem on the unwound strings.



If you're breaking them way back there, perhaps soldering them would help; if they're breaking near the bridge, there might be a sharp edge somewhere that's causing faster wear. You may have also just been unlucky and had a few packs of shitty strings -- especially if they're not the (relatively) newer Ernie Ball vacuum-sealed bags.

It's the rough holes inside the trem I think... especially as the Japanese chrome is very thin.

I was snapping strings almost daily... now a 1 1/2 years later. Not even one snap since... with any strings and I play it more often.

Yeah, smooth out them holes and DONT USE ERNIE BALL'S.

Used to only use them in my early years and then tried the cheaper D'adarios and they always seemed better and brighter to me. Some wise old guitar dude said there was really bad quality control on the EBs. I recently strung the CP Jag with EBs as thats all I could get in the local shop. Funnily enough I broke the E-string at the trem string retainer and then replaced them with D's. Instant betterness.

been using Ernie balls since I started and I break strings about once a year . . . the way I play, I should break a lot more.

the only strings that seem to break on me often are the Dean Markley Blue Steels......


I have been buyin D'addario 10packs for yrs now with no issues or breakage.... and as stated above they do sound brighter than most

All guitar strings are made in the same factory and are identical. Actually just D'addario and Gibson strings, so I've been told !

If I retrace all history of strings on my guitars, maybe Daddario is a bit more reliable. But not by much. This sounds like you need to get some sandpaper round the end of a pencil and gently file whole by twisting it.

By the way, I used Fender bullets on my Jag. I wouldn't say it was more stable or anything, but it looked cooler having 6 little solid weights rather than multi coloured loops. If that floats your boat.

I've been using d'adarrios for a long time but recently I've given some earnie balls a try. "yeah those shortscale guys all say they're crap but what do they know anyway." no joke, the high e string broke while I was tuning up.

it's shitty because guitar center and a lot of places' single strings only come in earnie balls. the soldering trick does work though.

i'm trying to remember the last time i bought individual strings, i think it was probably 1996, and they had all kinds of different brands in individual..
i used to snap my high e all the time on my ibanez.. but then again i was playing .08s back then..

I had a Mustang that ate E strings for dinner but really it was fine as long as I gave it an extra couple of wrappings.

Normally I only try to have 1/2 to 1 1/2 windings. Chris Kinman would be proud of me.

I have been playing with Balls since the 70s and mine never break. Uh, srsly. Maybe I am doing it wrong. I have had the same strings on my Musicmaster for several years and it doesn't even go out of tune. I would be willing to try other strings, I guess.

I think you must have a rough spot in your slot. Use a magnifier and tell us.

if you guys lived in fucking manland you wouldn't have to worry about this problem
