So, I played a Mustang for the first time today...

It was a 1978, much heavier than I expected, and had issues staying in tune. But, I liked the neck and the short scale. I was on the fence about my CV Duo-Sonic and sold it because it didn't get any use after I got my JM, but I could see myself being really happy with one of these.
What are some reasonable prices for used Mustangs?

for an early 70's one i'd pay like $700. for a heavy ass, late 70's in blahck? i'm not fancy on them so i won't speculate.

What store are you at? Is this at the Lewisville GC? That vaguely looks like a Guitar Center carpet and I have never seen a Mustang at Guitar Center (which is really sad). If so they want $895 for it. That seems a bit high. RI Mustangs go for $1000. Get them down to $700 and that would be an okay deal.

I wouldn't want that particular one as it is oddly heavy for its size. I read that the late 70s models were heavier due to an ash body. But, I'd love a lighter one that's a compstang. In fact the sales guy is selling a red compstang for $600 (it was a reissue released in '89 from what I remember him saying). It's mint and he's the second owner, but I don't have any way of buying it right now.

Actually, it was more the shelf the amps were in and the fact that he lives in the same area I do. We don't have many small guitar stores in this area anymore
I did actually play an old vintage Mustang at GC once, but it was really over priced. I played it when I was checking out CP Jaguar HHs.

just breaking ur balls brosiff...... the lack of small shops is very disheartening... Thank God St. Louis still has small-medium size shops.... but they hardly ever get anything new in so I feel I may be in the same boat in a few yrs.... I swear most of the small shop only stay afloat by tech work

Not All Ash Bodies are heavy. They vary quite a bit. My Brother-in-Law owns a lumber mill and they make Ash Guitar stock boards which is his best seller. He only sells the lighter ones which don't exceed a certain weight, which is what he sent me. It could be ash, but the weight varies a lot from board to board and what kind of Ash it is.

yeah, but that's not a real mustang body. a really nice musicmaster neck, but it's just a partstang. i'd never pay more than $500 for one of them, even with a real fender body/neck.

It's all good. I was just surprised to see a used Mustang in the locale. Kinda of a Unicorn around here. It's sad when the only shortscale in the whole store is the Blacktop Jaguar.(nothing against BT Jags) They at least used to have the CIJ Jaguar HH, but those are becoming rare as well. As if there are not enough Strats on the wall.

It's true. Aside from a MusicGoRound (part of a used gear chain), Best Buy, and the Guitar Centers, we only have four locally-owned guitar stores that I know of--Murphy's, Zoo Music, Charlie's, and Grapevine Guitar Works. There might be a few in Ft. Worth and Arlington I'm not aware of, but the lack of interesting non-chain guitar shops in Dallas and its burbs is a real bummer.

I used to love Larry Morgan Music in Garland. I bought 3 Taylors from him. Unfortunately, they went belly up after the son took over and closed shop. I really miss that store. His guitar tech opened up a shop on 75 and does repair work and classes.

this is kinda crazy... Dallas is way bigger than STL... we have way more than that... J. Gravity Strings, Acme, 2 Killer Vintage Locations, 1 Best Buy with music gear, 2 Guitar Centers, Eddies Music, Fazio's Frets & Friends, and at least a handful more not counting across the river in IL where there is another 10 or so
And some of these are actual niche' stores...
Killer Vintage is nothing new at all, just vintage gear...... Billy Gibbons is know to come to STL just for this store and Eddies is all High End....the cheapest amps they carry are Oranges and the cheapest guitars are American made Fenders
here are some sites if ur as bored as I am right now

Aren't most Mustangs kinda hefty? My Mustang is definitely heavier than the two Squier Strats I have hanging around. Longer, too.
Anyway, I got my Mustang for less than $500 last year.

Here's where I'm getting the info regarding weight for some of the 70s Mustangs:
http://fendermustangstory.com/default.htm
"
Around 1976, the black pickguard (black-white-black) replaces the white pickguard, the volume and tone knobs are changed to black ones used on the Stratocaster, and the tremolo bar tip is changed from white to black. One piece maple neck is available as an option. Along with the rest of the Fender line-up, all Mustangs had Ash body around this time frame. I've owned a 1974 and 1978 Telecaster and a 1979 Stratocaster and they all had ash bodies and weighed a ton--reason I got rid of them. Mustangs should have come from the same cut of ash as it's more expensive siblings, so there may be some real heavy Mustangs from this era.
Black-white-black plastic pickguards
Ash body
Optional one-piece Maple Neck
Headstock numbers: PAT. 2,741,146 2,960,900 3,241,418 3,143,028 3,290,980 DES. 204,098"
