I use "X amount of Beers" not time. The longer it takes the more fun it is.

My problem is sourcing the wood...

I was only that quick because I already had the tools out as I was making the templates. I already had the body blank, which I bought for £24 from an old style hardware store. Now I can make my own blanks, I can make a 2 piece poplar body for about £9. £12 for ash, but there is alot of work in making the blank. Tools are the key.

Wow! Great prices!! I paid about £70 for an ash blank, a maple board and a walnut piece for my fingerboard..and I had to go miles outta my way to get em!

The timber merchant I used is less than a mile from my house. They change by cubic metre. Then any cutting/ machining is a flat rate of £40+VAT. I priced up a huge 18inch wide board, that after machining would have made 7 one piece blanks. Big enough to make a bass or jazzmaster. They would have been £24 each, all in, ready to use. It turned out that it had been sold. Luthier suppliers seem to charge a shit load more for this kind of thing.

This is a Win Win deal...

if i can suggest something:

the edges have a visible line where they were formed (rollover bit?), and i would maybe try to smooth those out. if it's evident now, it can very well appear once painted (assuming you'll be painting it).

the aeon/portugalwillie/lucamo mustang had similar edges, and was quite apparent that they weren't as smooth as they could've been.

just a thought. looks great anyways.

If you are thinking about making stuff for other people at some point, I'd definitely be interested. The price of Fender or Warmoth et cetera bodies in the UK can get silly.

@Hotrod, I can see the line, but I haven't even thought about attacking this with sandpaper yet. I assure you that will be all smoothed out with a little sanding.

@Stuart, I'm more for inspiring people to do their own builds ATM.
This build used a £24 piece of wood, a £22 router, and about £25 of router bits. It's not that expensive or difficult to do your own!

I don't really have any real work space, so I rely on the weather because I'm working outside.
Dunno, I *might* do a few if there's interest.

Which tool did you use to round the edges of the body?

Round over router bit with a ball bearing on the end.

What round over profile are you using 3/4" or less?

@Joey, not sure of the radius of the roundover, I checked it against my old Jagstang and it's identical. I'm pretty sure it's metric too.

Sanded, sanded, sanded and sanded some more.
With a bit of grain filling somewhere inbetween.
Then a bit of shit-brown stain. Looking rather sexy and seventies-tastic!!!


I've got no money to buy laquer. So until I get paid, I'm gonna splash a bit of sanding sealer about, do more sanding and do the whole lot to my Telecaster body too.
