Ooooohhhhmmms. Ohms. I don't understand them.

I want to get an extension cabinet for my Classic 30 but I've no idea what ohms are, what they do or which one to get. The amp says either 16 or 8 ohms on the back or something and a 16 ohm minimum (it's at the practice rooms right now so I don't remember exactly). So what sort of cab is appropriate? 8ohms?

I'm probably going to get a cheapo cab like this and then replace the speaker with something a bit fancy like an Eminence or something.

Yeah, you need a 4 ohm cab.

16 or 8 will do mate but if Peavey advise 16 there is your answer. A mismatched cab will mean you either wont get the maximum output or you could fry your amp.

Aye, just found another thread on the Peavey website too saying the same.

Cool.

Actually, I've noticed that in a few cabs there's a fair bit of extra space around the baffle board the speaker is mounted to; if I just took a dremel to it and widened it out, would I be able to stuff a 15" guitar speaker in there? Are there any potentially fatal problems with doing this?

As long as it is securely mounted you wont get a problem.

speakers need X amount of room in an enclosure to function properly..... its usually rated in cubic ft, at least in the states

so find the recommend space and figure out the volume of the cab

if u do not have enough cab volume for a speaker it will sound shit and will not function as designed

Yeah, this is what I was worried about. I remember reading about a cab project on another website a few years ago. The guy made a really small perfectly box-shaped cabinet with the speaker mounted exactly upright and it sounded awful and vibrated to fuck. Somebody advised him to make a new one in a much, much bigger size and modify the shape and the internals so the sound wasn't just rattling around the straight edge corners of the box and it sounded much better. Something like that anyway.

Yes but generally speaking a lot of this is marginal and its not like he will mount the speaker in a biscuit tin right? Cabs come in nominal sizes.

Yeah, Eric, if you have a 15" speaker you need to build a 16" cab out of an old Budgie Cage, forget projection...

bingo, u got the jist of it.... It kills me when u see peeps use an old car stereo cab with guitar speakers in it...lol

if u want a 15" just buy a box for a 15".....Avatar cabs are nice but is US based..... there has to be something similar in the UK

Laff.

Building one myself is almost out of the question; my woodworking skills are a bit wack. Maybe buying a supercheap 15" bass cab and trying to get my hands on a good 15" guitar speaker is the answer. Then recovering it in tweed.
