Squier Classic Vibe Duo Sonic?

Post by astrozombie »

I'm interested in picking one up if the body will feel similar to my 78 mustang and it's a light guitar.
whats the deal with these? you guys like em? hate em?
anybody mod one? from looking at the pictures right off the bat i think id change the pickguard and see if i can get a different bridge
though that looks like installing it would be a pain in the ass.

Image

does anyone know the route? could i install a mustang shaped guard and just have to deal with the pickguard holes or would the route and shit get in the way?

wdmusic makes some mustang style duo sonic guards...

the search function works wonders, as this has been discussed to great lengths already. i'll try to help without appearing sardonic.

the necks are too fat for my liking, but would probably be a similar profile to your '78 mustang. not to mention that they look like they've never seen a day at the beach.

rob(OG) modded his by making a replica pickguard and moving the bridge pickup down a bit to get similar spacing to the vintage ones iirc. (here)

there's no point in looking at a picture of a guitar and thinking of all the shit you'd like to change on it if you haven't even played one. that's just asinine.

a mustang/duo sonic II pg will not fit as this guitar is not offset. check that link above to see pics of the route.

Fun guitars, especially if you like lots of gloss. I used to own one. Pickups are pretty good. Pickup a used one.

I own one and love it. It sounds very special. And i think lot of the sound comes out of that aluminiumpickguard...

Great neckshape and playability. Its the lightest guitar i own.

It's a nice guitar, but it doesn't feel or sound like a Mustang at all. It's much lighter. It's got a hardtail. The fretboard is completely different. And due to metal pickguard and pickups positions, the sounds are very different too.

I experienced two downsides for my part: First, the 3 pickup positions sounded very alike to me. I guess this comes from the heavily discussed bridge pickup position. Second, The frets are thin as on a vintage Fender, but high as on a modern Fender, let's say classic player. Very strange. Maybe they changed that, but it was the case on my guitar. Another thing is that sustain and brilliance is not too great when you play above 12th fret, but that's how it is and you may like it or not.

Aside of that, the guitar is pretty basic /thus maybe not as good a value as the other classic vibe guitars), but well made, sounds good, allows very good setup and low action with 11s, plays comfortable and is fully reliable when you gig it.

My CV Duo-Sonic is a great guitar. It's as light as an early vintage Mustang, perhaps a bit lighter than a post-70s Mustang. I like the neck very much; the tones are great; and I happen to love the shape, colors, and general aesthetics...that's individual taste. But so much of the performance, like sustain above the 12th fret, depends upon your amp, then on your peripherals.

As with any guitar, set-up is critical. I use 10s, and my action & intonation are perfect.

Regarding mods...why mod (unless you just love the hot-rodding process itself, which is cool)? Yer amp and pedals will give you every tone you could ever want...I've experimented a lot along these lines, and I would invest in these before modding the guitar. It's fine as is, in my opinion.

By the way, I bought mine used in mint condition for $249 USD. There are good bargains; you don't have to pay $300 or more.

I've been looking at them for ages now, ummming and ahhhing over them. I originally wanted to stick a black scratchplate on it cut for either one or two Gretsch-style filtertrons but if I get another guitar it pretty much has to be a baritone. This may be yet another awesome Squier that I miss out on.

Someone on here put a black pickguard on one and it was smoking hot. I love the gold pickguard, but black was nice.

No, not really. Some company was selling a couple backstock ones for $100 onlein as part of an inventory sale to get rid of them (they only had 2 or 3), but some of us more wise peopel called GC and MF and made them match the price and ordered a bunch of them (I myself ended up ordering about 10 of them and msot of them ended up in SS'ers hands at cost after alot fo shipping issues. but that was a whole different debacle and not the norm. GC and MF have since for the most part stopped matching prices without verifyin that it is not considered a closeout, etc. Price matching is only suppossed to work on regular sale prices, not ebay, auctions, closeouts, clearance, etc.

I snoozed on these for $99. That price was a steal as far as I'm concerned.

I'd love to have one and put a cream or parchment guard on it.

I bought a 70s musicmaster guard like that a long time ago to see if it would fit on my 90s duo-sonic (which is the same body shape as the CV). it was not even close to fitting.
