If you didn't own any equipment and could only spend $500, what would you buy? What about with $1000?

$500 would not cut it for me, but I could do something with $1k

amp... Egnater Tweaker combo or possibly the Jet City 20w Head and 2x12 cab

pedals....Big Muff and some sort of an OD....maybe an OCD

Guitar.... buy a used Epi G400 and mod the shit out of it or a New Blacktop Jazzmaster

I assume you mean new/in store. not CL

If I only had 500 to spend I would wait until GC, MF, Sam Ash, et chas one of their 15-20% off your ticket sales.. and buy:

For home use....

Squier VM Jazzy 299
Mustang II amp (has tuner and effect to play with 199
gig bag/strap/etc 50
Total 465 with 15% off qpon...

If I was gigging..

Bullet Strat 119
Peavey Windsor Studio 20 watt 299
gig bag.etc 50
generic floor multi effects 99
Total 481 (with 15% off)

I go with the windsor and the bullet becuase both are decent starting points for modding down the road to your taste. That or go with a solid state like the mustang III for about the same price. Jet City combo as well but I think they went up to 399 after I picked up the one Al has now.

For 1K

home use
Yamaha acoustic 150
CV Strat (versatile) 350
m9 350
Blackstar ht1 250
gig bag/etc 75 (2 bags)
Total 999 with 15% off

Gigging
Bullet strat (backup) 119
CV Tele 350
Floor Pod 199
Gig Bag/etc 50
Jet City 1x12 combo 399
Total 950 with 15% off.

I'll do it based on £500:

Image
Squier Jazzmaster - £254

Seems like it would be kind of like my favourite parts of my two main guitars (Squier Jagmaster and Fender Baja Telecaster):
- Offset body like the Jagmaster
- Colour scheme of the Tele
- 25.5 inch scale like the Tele
- Soapbar pickups would be somewhere between the two sounds
- Has a trem like the Jagmaster

Image
Laney RB5 - £230

I know this is a bass amp, but I've played guitar through the one at my school many times and I prefer it to any of the budget guitar amps I've played through. Plus it's LOUD.

Image
Behringer Super Fuzz - £17

It can do most of the dirt sounds I need - although perhaps not slightly as well as the pedals I currently use.

£501... shush, no-one will notice.

Burns Nu-Sonic or Cobra - £200
Bugera V22 valve amp - £226
EHX Holy Stain - £60

Rest is beer money.

£1000 is luxurious, I've never had anything like that to spend so I wouldn't know where to start.

CV tele - $250 used
Vox Pathfinder 15r - $80 used
Monser cables - $40 for all leads
Pitchblack - $70 used
DIY the rest

For a grand id do
AC15 - $400 used
CV tele - $250 used
M13 - $350 used

Retail prices are for suckers

Peavey Bandit - Used $100 bucks
Epiphone Dot - $150 (with pickup/hardware change)
Behringer/Dano Pedals - $70 (tuner, delay, eq, turd screamer, chorus)

This is my set up with how much I've spent on everything - $320 investment.

The gigging setup I've used for the past couple of years costs about £500.

Musima Elgita: £100 plus £120 replacement neck from Setchell Guitars
Pedals: £20 in parts for micro amp, harmonic percolator, schaller tremolo clones, Behringer verbzilla copy £40
Fender Musicmaster Bass amp £220

I'd happily gig an affinity series squier strat or tele (I only play the Musima because it looks gorgeous and has single coil pickups)- all you really need is a decent valve amp.

I'd just get a $500 guitar and then start saving up again for a good amp after that, as I'm cleverer.
