Hello,

Noob here, well not to guitars, but tinkering with them.

I have a problem, my mustang decided it didn't want to make any sound anymore when plugged into my amp or to my audio interface on my computer. So, through my amazing powers of deduction I figured something has gone awry in the depths of the beast!

I really don't know how this happened to be honest, I haven't dropped it or banged it about (that I can remember anyways!), so I am kinda puzzled.

I want to open the bugger up and see if I can fix it myself, because it's about time I started learning about this kind of thing I reckon. But before diving straight in and probably making things worse, I thought I would ask you knowledgable folk in Shortscale land for any advice or pointers.

If anyone has wired up a mustang before and can tell me what i should be looking out for, or if anyone has any wiring schematics for a mustang 65 ri, I would be extremely greatful.

If everything went dead all of the sudden, the first thing I would suspect is the output jack. The wire that connects to that may have come lose. I'd check that first - three screws, and the control plate lifts right off. With the wiring diagram, you should be able to check the interior control plate wiring (jack, volume and tone controls) easily - if the problem isn't in there, it's the cable coming from the pickups to the control cavity... there's really no other way it would ALL go dead unless it was one of those things, or one of the contacts in between them (the volume control, etc.) - both switches or pickups aren't likely to die at the same time.

what phil said. 90% of the time when everything dies at once, it is the jack. you may have tightened it so much that the jack was spinning inside the guitar and wrapping the lead up like a garden hose until it broke.

I would check the two connections on the jack and those are good, check that the other end of those leads is solid. If that isn't the case it may take some detective work.

And your sure ALL switching positions don't make noise

It's not that hard. Get a good Digital Multi-Meter and use the continuity tester on it in conjunction with the wiring diagram to check the signal flow... you should be able to track down the problem pretty easily that way... but as we said, chances are it's the output jack - start there first, and if that's not the issue, work your way backwards towards the pickups from there.
