Yo dudes,
I want a small 5w tube amp for school. I've been eying the Fender Champ 600. I don't need much, I've got a big muff for distortion. Any suggestions as to what I should check out otherwise? I'm shooting at around $200

Pathfinder is awesome, and the Valvetronix is quite good (I have an 50w version, really like it).
AC4TV is an amp, I would buy now for my home use.

I like my Champion, but it's definitely it's own thing, it's not versatile. It can be tinny and not massively bassy in any convincing way. Cranked with overdrive pedals it can sound nice and boomy and nasty, but still not what you'd call a refined bass sound.
It is loud enough for me to gig with, mind. It's true that I only play with a pianist, but I still think you wouldn't be able to dime it without annoying your neighbours.
I also have a EVJ head, but I can't really compare them because I've only heard that going into my 200w Marshall 412 and once a Hartke 410. It's much warmer sounding, but then it would be.

Jet City Picovalve is in that basic area is just a bit more expensive and you would need a cab.

I wound up going for a Epiphone Valve Junior Combo. The shop owner did a direct trade for my speaker cab. From what I've played so far, it sounds pretty good.

I'd love to hear a side by side demo of the EVJ head with a 412 and the EVJ combo. I don't think there'd be much point hearing recordings of the difference, so it would have to be real life.
Just to see how much of the sound I'm getting is down to the cab, like.

the cab would probably have more bass but sound generally 'tighter' and more direct, the combo would sound more 'open' since the sound is bouncing around everywhere. from my experience playing combos/open back cabs versus closed back cabs.

That's the one knob amp right? Sounds good if I remember correctly.

I'll just resurrect this to point out that Dawson's (UK) are
doing a deal on the VHT Special 6 head (turret-tag, handwired, provide a schematic so you can tinker!) and 1x12" cab together £199.

That's a crazy good deal. Sounds like lots of fun to be had with that thing.

Pretty good, but really, Pathfinder kills it IMO, especially if you rely on pedals for distortion.
I enjoy both, though.
