Just ordered some of these online:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/169377/8 ... holes.html

I've been keen to see what they look like fitted. I'll post some pics when they get here in around 10 days time...

Thanks to workoffire for the design listed above... the talented man that he is !!

cheers

Fucking shapeways.

Unless the 3D printing rapid prototyping technology they use has been massively improved in the last year or so you're going to have to file that think to within an inch of its life to get the tooling marks out. And you'd best not apply too much pressure to the plastic as it might be brittle and not at all the same sort of feel as a regular pickup cover. Just depends what sort of plastic they used.

The whole point of those machines is to construct a raw piece that is then worked on and improved, which will then be molded and cast in resins or metals. Not sure how good it's going to be for pickup covers, especially raw.

Still, post a picture when they get to you. I could be just blowing air about them, but last time I saw 3D printing used for stuff like that it wasn't pretty. Functional, but not pretty.

Hmm, the plastic options all say strong and flexible.. Maybe it'll be fine.

I might even consider the black ones if they turn out alright.

I'll see when they arrive. I think it'll need some wet sanding but that's not a prob. A guy on offset got some and just said the finish was a bit unusual but he liked it.

I'll be needing to sand off a fair bit on the lower rim to accommodate the cools rails humbucker anyways, & I'll probably stain them in tea / coffee if they're bright white so would need roughing up a bit anyways.

I'm intrigued more than anything, they may just end up in the bin.

So I received them this eve, The finish is a little strange... but not unlikeable, across between textured paper & foam packaging.

Set about fitting them.... I didn't bother sanding them other than underneath to allow for the single coil sized humbucker to fit properly.

I also glued plastic sleeves to the sides to hide the gaps where the claws would normally go.

I managed to completely ruin my stock jag neck pickup somehow. Replaced it with the bridge pickup I removed years ago... which I'm sure is lower output, which is a good thing here. It's quite nice in the neck, more open and more useable for chordal stuff. No great loss.

Kinda got a mustang vibe to it now ? Let me know what you think...

oh yeah also swapped out the mint green guard for the original tort it came with... think it works better with the new covers.

Can't wait to try the bridge cover when it gets here.

How did you find the difference in tone with the new covers? I DEFINITELY noticed some high end missing when I tried "robroe" covers on my Strat; just couldn't dig it.

I would say the tone is perhaps a little darker... which I don't think is bad for me & mine, and there's an adde character to the sound which I can't quite put my finger on. More even bass / mid / treble sorta thing which is probably a result of the covers.

The claws will work fine on these, I've just had endless problems with claws myself so chose not to opt for them. I would say with this type of cover they'd probably look better without, but would be cool to see !!!

they look pretty sweet, but a bit more squared off around the corners than a real jag pickup cover. no claws?

Yes that. :D

Just ordered some avri pickups so these wont be on for too long... I wanna revert back to a stock jag again / claws and all.

I'll probably end up throwing theese into classifieds.
