I'm guessing I'm a lesser player than most of you, but the pre-1980 Fender gear is VERY hard to come by down at the bottom end of Australia. This was roughly the price of one of the current reissues, and since I have worked my ass off on a long project which I just finished, I went for it. I figured I will never need to buy another amp, it's great with my bass as well (and my VI if I ever finish it). It sounds so good I would probably pass out if I heard a blackface.
Plus it will keep me fit, more than 70 pounds of over-engineered construction.

What's weird is the MIJ neck pickup sounds better than the AVRI in the bridge.

all it needs is casters.

of course. the trick is to put an MIJ neck pickup in the bridge. it sounds great, and i'd like to do mine with an avri neck pup in the neck, and an MIJ neck pup in the bridge to see how that combi works.

That's an interesting idea, I didn't realise the MIJs were different pickups for bridge and neck. I think my AVRI is actually a neck pickup anyway. Might have a think about that since I need to turn the claw around on the neck PU and reverse the phase of the bridge so that I don't get the out of phase when they combine. I know lots of people love that sound but I can't stand it. Sounds like a Strat.

Awesome score, dude! I love the early '70s Fender combos, and you couldn't kill that amp if you tried. What I love most about the bigger guys is the ridiculous amount of clean headroom on tap -- something you can't fake with a pedal. Of course, this means you need a pedal for any sort of overdrive, but at least you're not married to your amp's single overdriven sound.

I think we in the States take the availability of these amps for granted, so it's nice to hear someone out of he country acquire and appreciate one. Heavy mothers though, as you know; I'm converting my '73 Vibrosonic (same amp in 1x15) into a head/cab because the weight has become too much for me.

Suitably jealous - would love a Twin.

I have a '70 Silverface Twin (like yours minus the master volume). Mine is not in as nice of condition as it was a former rental from a local shop that was closing.

That headroom really is noticeable, I'm not used to playing with that and occasionally I'll hit harder than usual and get knocked sideways by the punch.
I'm wondering about drive though - I would really like something with just a slight burr on the edge of the tone, a sound like tubes just hitting the top end of their comfort zone. Am I going to need to shell out big bucks to find it in a pedal?

I've spent a considerable of time (eight years with this amp) chasing the exact thing -- that slight drive -- and I always come back to my stock Boss SD-1 because it seems to fit really well in the mix. It stays on almost constantly, and I run it into an EHX Germanium OD that gets kicked on as a filthy boost at times. I tend to run the channel volume around 4 or 5 and adjust the master to a comfortable volume. You may have better luck with amp breakup than I, as the 15" gives me none.

Other things I've tried to use for light to moderate drive include a Ruetzified RAT 2, Marshall ShredMaster and DriveMaster, and an Original Sansamp; still, nothing fits as well as the SD-1 out of the pedals I have. A Tube Screamer would also probably be great. I just picked up a Lovepedal Les Lius that I haven't tried with the band yet, but so far it's the closest contender I've found that may unseat the SD-1.

The nice thing (or annoyance, depending on one's perspective) about a loud, clean amp like this is it provides a bright white canvas on which to shit any kind of dirty mess you'd like.

What a beautiful image, thank you for that. The 2x12 is the same breakup-wise - I tried with the MV down and channel gain up high, and the sound is just revolting, you'd throw away a pedal which sounded like that.
I might have a look at an SD-1 if I can - I have a Boss DF-2 distortion but that's from my Jesus and Mary Chain days and I want something a little more subtle now!

Which '72? Does it have the push/pull Master?

Looks delightful. I love my Jag and '72 Twin Reverb combo to bits... so jangly.

That was kind of my rationale too. Of course, now I want something to give me some overdriven amp sounds too, so it kinda backfired

It does sound great with bass, and my Hellcat VI sounds mint through it... I just have to be careful not to play too loud, as I'm not sure how much bass at high volume the speakers will take.
