Picked up a rocktron metal planet distortion pedal recently, for very little monies.
Has anyone used one and if so what do you think?Are they any good and what do they compare too if anything.
I'm no expert on distortion pedals (use my sd-1 most of the time tbh) - any opinions on them?

I have not ever used one, the Hush is maybe the only thing by them I've used. How do you like it?

Depends on what you want out of it. You can serve up some death metal for shure..

Agreed, it's a bit too heavy for my liking tbh, although the distortion is very smooth.
I've just picked up a ds-1 which i'm going to have a crack at modding - it's got one hell of a loud buzzing sound when the level knob is turned past halfway, is this normal with ds-1's?

That is not normal...You should try that pedal with different guitars to make shure it is the pedal and not your guitar making the buzzing. I have 2 modded DS-1s Monte Allums/Keeley and they work awsome.

Ok, so here's a pic of the pcb from the metal planet - i fancy modding it so it's more of a fuzz pedal rather than distortion - am i right in saying that the transistors give the fuzz sound?If so, what type should i look for?

Looking an awful lot like a Boss MT-2! I can't tell for sure without a schematic or the other side of the board but I'd put my money on it being an MT-2 clone. Maybe not value for value but I bet it's really close. Do you have a schematic for it? It sure would help us help you out.

Edit: Oh, the transistors are probably used for switching and gyrators (EQ'ing).

Yep! That's an MT-2. I don't know if you're going to get a decent fuzz sound out of it. Let me look at the schematic some more and give it some thought. I'm off to take the kids to go see the new Pirates of the Caribbean right now so I may not get to it until tomorrow.

If your looking for a metal pedal for fuzz type tone. Danelectro Black Coffee about 15 buck on the bay. Give it a shot.

Might take DGW's advice and actually just buy a fuzz pedal.

Hmm, probably the best idea methinks.

I dont like using pedals for distortion anyway, and i especially hate the mt2. Mod the hell out of it!

I hope you mod that pedal just for the heck of it...What is the worst that can happen. Something very different is a good thing.

I'll even get you started.

Lift the + leg of C20 and put a spst switch between C20's leg you just lifted and the solder pad you took it out of.
Next, lift the leg of C24 (the one that connects to pin 6 of IC4) and put a spst switch between the lifted leg and empty solder pad.

Each switch will disable a pre-EQ gyrator. Try it before drilling any holes though to make sure it's working and you like it.

You can do the same with the side of C34 that is connected to pin 6 of IC3. This one is pre-clipping.

Do you build pedals? You are probably the most helpful person on this forum in regards to pedal innards.

I frequent a few forums when I have time that I think are cool and help out the DIY community as much as possible.
