Low gain fuzz.

I'm sure a lot of people on here will be aware of my tendency to buy and sell lots of OD/Fuzz/Dist pedals in my seemingly fruitless quest for my ideal tone. However I have now found a pedal I genuinely love (I know i've said this before), it's an EQD Tone Reaper which I believe is a version of the Tone Bender Mk III. I'm also using a Hoof which I also really like. One downside of the Tone Reaper is the level of sustain and lack of getting a lower level of fuzz which I need for some songs that I play.

What i'm looking for is a pedal with a lower level of fuzz but still with a gritty and full sound, maybe something that crosses the OD or Dist/Fuzz border would be good - but the emphasis on the fuzzy-ness of the sound is what I want. One pedal that I have been thinking about is a Harmonic or Utility Percolator, which I remember being quite fuzzy but really more of a OD/Dist, but i'd like to know if anyone has any more suggestions.

You really, really need to try a Rangemaster: I know it's a treble booster, but it does exactly what you're after - I love mine. It was the first pedal I ever made, and it's a mess, but if I think it'll survive the trauma of postage, I'll lend it you.

Thanks Benecol. Does it distort the signal itself or will it need to overdrive my amp to dirty up the sound?

Signal itself - it's like a fuzz that only fuzzes certain parts of your signal, almost in the same way that a wah accentuates them. It's dead good.

That sounds interesting, if you don't mind lending it to me i'd like to borrow to see what it's like. I'll PM my address.

Let me check it's not too delicate (I repeat - I made this) then I'll post it out.

From what you describe you want the J. Everman Fuzz Drive G2 is worth a look (though it is a bit expensive).

At the risk of another flaming, sounds like your after a danelectro cool cat fuzz to me. I was given a V2 as a birthday present and I’m pretty sure you could get the sound your after by tweaking the dip switches in the battery compartment.

Psssh, sounds killer with good humbuckers.

Edit:

The fuzzes I've liked the most dial out nicely with the guitar's volume knob. The ones I like the least seem to mask the guitar sound. Lately I've been thinking of just getting a couple good boost pedals. Not even using a compressor anymore.

I just bought a HoofReaper ... total fuzz pedal using hypocrite ... me.

I used to have one of these and, although it was really good, the level of fuzz is more than what i'm after. Thanks for all the suggestions but I think i'm going to give the Harmonic Percolator another go, hoping to pick one up for cheaps.

Have you thought about using a booster in front of your higher-gain boxes, but setting it CUT rather than BOOST?

It's generally more effective than just rolling down your guitar's volume, because it doesn't fuck with your tone.

In a word, no. But i'll give it a try and see what happens.
