I think Alex James from Blur has a 1-stringed bass. He never used it in Blur but I read in his autobiography that he used it on this...

...because the bassline only has one note in it. And at the only ever Fat Les gig he broke the string.
Kind of a shit song but I like Blur.
EDIT: Upon further listening there is considerably more than one note in the song. My bad.

I never understood why they insisted on confusing the poor brutes bass players by adding those other 3 strings...

Had a friend of mine not posted this video the other day, I would not have realized this was a (parody?) of The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony.
Rather weird to have a bass with only one string, though I should be one to talk, my bass had 1 in tact working tuner head for a long time, then it broke off mysteriously.

Hahah now that I think about it it really is not so rediculous. Unless you play bass like Lou Barlow, you really don't need those strings, it just looks cooler that's all.

I used to play in a band where the bass player never tuned the A D and G strings as he said he had no use for them... and all joking aside he was a fuckin great bass player

first band I played an instrument in I played bass and if I played anything other than the E or A string or above the 10th fret I got a kicking. Root, 3rd and 5th was all I needed and that was on our "jazz" numbers

Bassist from The Jesus and Mary Chain uses 2 strings too. For many bassists there isn't a point to having four, sadly.

Loved Morphine. Sandman was about as smooth on bass and vocals as it gets. For about a year I'd listened to Yes every night before I would drift off to sleep.
Here's a one string bass and 3 string cigar box guitar all in one.
Richard Johnston.

I would think you want 4 just to not warp the neck or anything.

Playing the root and fifth? Boorrrrring. But I really didn't give a shit about bass until I got into the Dead. Bass = groove machine.

I play across all 4 strings (all 6 on my VI), but, one of my major influences is a duo with bass and drums, the Inbreds:

And another, Duotang:

There are plenty of examples of bass style that barely use the instrument

I personally need em all, because how could I make the bass go SKWEEEEEEE if I had only E and A? (my playing style is somewhere between Lemmy and a guy just beating his bass)
