Jagmodster

Post by brainfur »

jagmaster, y'all

Image

Bought it off Craigslist for 180, used, and it was probably more than I should have spent for a used squier, but I really wanted a guitar NOW, and it feels worth it.

its light, the neck is great, the pickups are... not embarrassing, but I'll probably swap them out.

Only real problem is that it goes outta tune ridiculously fast in "rock" conditions...

I'm guessing thats either the tremololo's fault or (probably) the tuners?

So, I need recs on good tuners and maybe a good tremolo-blocking howto, as well as advice on humbucker-options that sound awesome, yet different from PAFs (our little fake band's main guitarist has a vintage LP so he has that part of the sonic spectrum on lock-down)

Code: Select all

EDIT: o yeah, the guy said the wiring had been upgraded due to general shittiness, and the nut/fret ends seem to have been filed down a bit.
Last nite I played for 3 hrs thru a marshall 1/2 and the pickups sounded really bright, a little thin. At home on my crate practice amp, the pups sounded just awful, so I guess I could use some advice on a better practice amp too...

ad an extra spring in the back to lock the trem down.... look at GFS for pick ups and tuners... and u may not need new tuners...the tuning issues may be from the strings binding at the nut...what gauge are u using?

it may just need a set up (nut filed, etc..)

Oh, and get rid of that white pickguard, White PG on Black is ugo... but thats just my opinion

I have actually been eyeing a Silver Sparkle Jagmaster on CL for $150 but its 25.5" scale...so I will prolly pass

well, the nut has been filed pretty thoroughly-- the setup was decent-- low action, no buzz...

I'm gonna start by blaming the tremolo-- is an extra spring better than jamming a stick into the trem cavity? I don't have a tremolo bar for it so its not like I can use it anyway.

I have heard good things about GFS pups and they seem to be the cheapest? I wonder why squier doesnt use those instead of DD?

The white pickguard looks better in person than in photos-- I hated it too from photos but im neutral about it in person. I really want a green or orange pickguard, but thats gonna cost me 50 bucks custom unless someone knows a source that i dont

do GFS for pu's and tuners, I love my GFS p90's

I have always just used an extra spring on Strats..its the easiest

I would not spend the cash on a new PG as its a low buck project while u save for a Proper Jag...but would keep my eye open for a cheap used one for say $20.... here, ebay n such

if you go to gfs just buy a cheap pickguard blank and have you/friend cut a replacement, it's like nine bucks

I put 5 springs in when I want it blocked. It still goes out a touch when I do alt tuning because of the tension but other than that it's rock solid.

I thought Jagmaster tuners were okay? It might just be the nut or something, but if you're ordering new pickups anyway why the hell not.

Like everyone else has said: GFS. They're great!

If your problems include "being able to bend strings adequately" and "fully-functioning carpal tunnel" maybe..

Ok fine-- no more poles/polls. I jammed a piece of wood into the trem cavity -- ill report on whether that solved my tuning issues tomorrow!

Half the time when a guitar has tuning issues, putting on a new set of strings and just doing a careful setup gets rid of most problems.

Guitar doesn't even have an A string. I'd definitely suggest restringing.

I think black Jagmasters really only need that one mod, you know, the tortoiseshell guard. Guaranteed to make the guitar sound 40% less suck.

Well yes, clearly I replaced all the strings before saying it has tuning issues-- that picture was taken in the street after I bought it from a dude who was scared to let me into his building.

I agree about the pickguard tho-- the white makes it look even cheaper

Also, there are 3 springs currently-- ill buy 2 more when I have time to stop by my local spring shop.
