Ovation Applause AA13

Post by twangster »

Has anyone played this short scale acoustic? How does it sound and play. I'm thinking it might be good for leaving in the car, camping, kicking around with no worry. They are $ 149 with free shipping on Amazon.

I have not played that model, but I have owned an Applause, and IMO, it was a great "beach / campfire" guitar. They're inexpensive, rugged and fairly loud - pretty much ideal for that kind of thing IMO.

Actually, those DO look pretty cool. I like the red one:

The only downside is that the body appears to be a shallow bowl. I like the sound of the deep bowl Ovations better; they have better bass and a more balanced sound. But for $149, you're not expecting it to sound like a pre-war D-28... or at least you shouldn't be. ;) Looks like just under 24" scale. Kind of similar to Taylor's 23.5" GS Mini, which I have played, and really dug - but it's $499.

I got it!

I bought one on ebay yesterday for $ 100 plus $ 15 for shipping. I'm thinking it will be great for kicking around and leaving in the car without worrying about it. I really like the Taylor GS mini but the Applause cost $ 400 less.

Yeah, $400 is a significant price difference! Please let me know what you think of your new Applause once it arrives.

I bought an AE13 about 12 years ago. And it's still my main guitar. Lovely sound and playability. Replaced the nut and tuners 2 years ago The most playable guitar I've owned... (I've had 2 Ibanez S-Series, a Les Paul, Strats and a Jagmaster). I've used it live too - either with the piezo or a soundhole pickup. I'm looking for another one now. You will not be disappointed if you get one...
