Whammy creep

I notice on both my Mustangs (US 66 and Japanese) that after I play a few minutes they go slightly out of tune, then if I pop the whammy they go back in tune, almost like a reset. These are strings that already stretched the heck out of too.

Anyone else experience this, or have a fix?

They're binding at the nut as you play - file or sandpaper the nut a tiny bit (really, go gentle, just enough to smooth any burrs out) then lube: I've got some graphite sanded into vaseline that I use - some people will just use pencil.

Pencil always works for me, but I haven't been much of a whammy fiend.

Pencil graphite works great, but I don't like to use it on white nuts. For that, I use a Teflon gel syringe I get at Radio Shack. Stuff works great, and you only need a tiny droplet. Of course, if your nut needs to be buffed with an Emory cloth, filed, or re-cut, no amount of graphite or Teflon is going to keep strings from binding on it...but if you attempt to DIY, read and study about it first, and go easy; it's always easier to take more off than it is to add more back, and if you cut the nut slots too low or wide, the guitar is guaranteed to buzz.

Neither Teflon nor graphite is an "oil", is it?

Lube is the word that works IMO. Lube your white nuts.
