Downtuning on Shortscale Basses

Post by jagsonic »

What experiences do you have with alternate tunings on shortscale basses? In my band i use a jazzbass tuned two downsteps in d. Now i will eventually buy a mustang bass. Does it work in d?

Just up the string gauge and you'll be fine.

Agreed with this. I play .045 - .105 on all my basses and they all handle all of the low tunings that I've played in. On my Musicmaster bass I have only used it at practices in lower tunings but it held very well!

Don't know anything about bass, but Dr. Strings makes DDT's for bass. I like them for electric guitar.

La Bella 760FM-S should handle everything.

I used the DR Fat Beams on my p bass a couple times, and felt they were too bright and metallic sounding. I know they're designed with Marcus Miller, so that's probably the kind of sound you want for the type of stuff he's famous for. But they weren't for me, They felt nice, so I might try a different set of DR bass strings. I've heard good things about GHS bass boomers even though I hate their guitar strings. I've been using regular D'addario .045 to .105 for the past couple years now, but am getting tired of them. I feel like they're chewing up my finger tips, and they keep their tone for a decent amount of time, but I'm still not impressed. When the shop I bought my Rickenbacker from set it up for me, they put a set of Ken Smith strings on, and they sound and feel amazing! I've had the same set on that bass since I bought it in January and they still feel and sound great! I don't know how much they cost since they put them on my Ric included as part of the free set up they gave me, but they might be my new favorite round wound strings!

I don't own one... but i've played both 2 pickup and 1 pickup Mosrite models.

I've also owned Univox and Eastwood Hi-Flyer basses, which are copies of the Mosrite style bass.

To the OP: I've tuned down to C standard on my short scales. I have La'Bella Flats on the one i used to tune down (Gretsch G2202), and it worked out great!
