Squier Mustang or Jaguar SS bass?

Post by johnnyseven »

I finished a training course early today so headed down to Denmark Street as i'm thinking of getting a SS bass for home recording. They have both the Jaguar SS and Mustang bass in. They both looked pretty good and they were the same price but now i'm not sure which to get, i'm thinking the Jaguar as it has 2 pickups for a bigger variety of sound - what does Shortscale think?

I think the Jaguar feels like a better quality instrument....

there's something a cheap feeling about the mustang.

If you want something that you can reliably use in its stock condition... look into a Gretsch G2202. They retail for about the same as the Squier Mustang ($300 USD).

If you are a fan of modding, the Jaguar can be upgraded easily enough, because i agree... the stock pickups are pretty weak. On the cheaper end of the spectrum, a Squire Bronco can also be upgraded easily and at low cost, with a VERY nice sounding final product.

I haven't seen the new Squire 'Stang in stock anywhere yet...

if you're not stuck on having a shortscale i'd go for the CV jazz or precision. arguably better quality at around the same price.

These are awesome!

I've been looking at the CV 51 P for a bit, now.

But if you want a shortscale, the Bronco is pretty baller.

I really wish I could play the squier mustang next to a bronco and find out whether its really worth 2x the price :(

The fender mustang is definitely worth about 400. Unfortunately it costs 700 new.

I'm facing the same dilemma but I'm still searchin.

I haven't seen the mustang in stores yet. But I would hope it would feel and sound better than the jags. I wasn't a fan of the jags. The pickups sucked, and they just kinda felt cheap overall. Considering that the mustang costs more than the jags I would hope that it would feel better.

Here's a link to a review I did of the Jaguar SS:

http://www.harmonycentral.com/docs/DOC-2072

Overall, I was pretty impressed - especially for the price. While I agree that the bridge (J Bass) pickup is pretty weak, I really like the P Bass pickup, so IMO only one of the two pickups really needs to be replaced - that's assuming that all of them are basically the same as the review unit. The pair of pickups does give it more tonal versatility than a single pickup model.

I still have not tried the Squier Mustang Bass yet, so I can't comment about its comparative merits.
