when you play fat fucking strings and get used to playing them high up it kind of TOTALLY SUCKS to pick up and play anyone elses guitar. because i press so fucking hard that i sharp every note i touch on them.

Pretty much this.

Wouldn't you go sharp with high action anyway? The more you have to deflect to reach the fret, the greater the tension, the sharper the fretted note??

your theory makes sense but it doesn't happen for me.

i only go sharp when i play lower action with small strings (small for me is .11 or .10's) if its got .9's on it i wont even bother picking it up. it goes sharp after the string hits the fret and my finger keeps pushing down thru the fretboard. ive evolved some very heavy hands with .13's, high action, on the left hand and a very percussive right hand

Intonation has nothing to do with your strings going sharp when you press hard on the strings. That's to do with being used to thick strings. With medium jumbo frets my strings don't even touch fingerboard at ANY point on the neck (it is very new though). If rob got on mine strung with 10s I would fully expect him to bend them sharp until they touched the wood. Also, refretting wouldn't change anything either - if anything low worn frets would limit the chance of sharp notes because you touch the fingerboard everytime.

Funny thing... with really low action & vintage frets I often end up digging on board... however I can see how that urethane over maple will really suffer

But who gives a shit. 8) :P :D

Dirty maple is cool.

I set my action as low as possible before it starts buzzing through an amp. I use 11s and 12s. Also have a medium action on my classical with 'normal' tension pro artes.

As anally set up as is humanly possible for low action with no buzz. Fuck high action all to hell. [/tiny hands]

There's a lot of corksniffers who say high action gives better tone because that's what Stevie Ray Vaughan had. As long as the string isn't touching the other frets it shouldn't make any difference as far as I can grok.

A lot of teh bloozerz like high action to get under other strings when bending to stop unwanted noises, jazz for the ultra minimisation of buzz. There's a lot of bullshit about high action strings "not picking up magnetic frequencies so they can ring clearer and longer" but you can just as easily lower the bloody pickups. If anything high action makes volume levels imbalanced: If I play an open string it's at it's heightest (quitest) point from the pickup, but if I play another note at the 12 fret or something the angle of the string is going to be noticably closer to the pickup making it much louder, depending on the gradient, as it descends to the fret. However this is only really a problem with the neck and middle pickcups, and even then it might be what you want. Anyway, your guitar will get louder up the neck which is actually an interesting proposition seeing as rhythm is often supposed to be quiter than soloing up top.

I like my action as close to 'average' around 4/64" or whatever Fender says to do it to. Nice and easy to play, with no buzzing through amps.

Like most of you, low as poss without any problems- high actions just force your guitar out of tune because of the extra pressure required to make contact with the frets.
