Wah woe

Was after a wah/volume pedal with a broad range and liked the look of the old 70s MASSIVE shiny Morleys so I got one pretty cheap off a guy in Germany over ebay.
He's got good feedback and was very helpful and I have no doubt he's innocent in all this - he says it was tested.
I used to live in Berlin and remembered using all my gear over there with no problem. However das wah funktioniert nicht! I tried it first with a German to UK plug adapter - it let the guitar signal through when engaged by the pedal had no effect. So I tried fitting a UK plug - this tripped the circuit breaker!
I've told the guy and he's confirmed it was working when he had it.
Anyone got any idea what could be going on here? Have I blown up my new wah-wah?
