Cornell 1st Fuzz

I picked one of these up last week, its basically a Fuzz Face & contains some hard to find mojo transistors & is allegedly hand wired by an original solder monkey fuzz master etc etc etc
It sounds great, nice bottom end & cleans up with your guitars vol control.
There is no LED but thats not biggie, its battery only which does bother me.... enviroment etc. Can I just get one of them battery to DC connectors or hard wire this pedal??? I know these germanium fellas don't daisy chain but on their own supply?

All depends if it's based on a negative ground fuzzface or a positive one.

It's probably battery only because it's positive ground - but it's not game over. You could install a DC jack or a clip converter and use it on a Boss style supply but just NOT daisy chain with other "regular" pedals.

I wire my Fuzz Faces like this all the time.

Hmmm, I can't use a clip converter as its not a battery snap, just two bits of sprung steel.
Can I just snip the Red & black wires off this & solder a DC output to the end then run it off a Boss power supply?

Yes, but we'd need to know which way round he has coded his red and black

You're dealing with GND and -9V here

GND would normally be BLACK and +9V RED

Here the GND is effectly +9V and is RED
and -9V is BLACK, since GND potential is 9V below the 9V.

If you can trace or check with a DMM which is connected to the jack grounds (Sleeves) that'll be the 9V (GND in this circuit) and we can get started.

Get this DC jack btw - 2 pins, and only needs an 8mm hole:

DC Panel-mount Power Socket.
3A 12Vdc rated.
Locates in an 8mm circular panel hole.
Max panel thickness 3mm.
Available to suit 2.1 and 2.5mm power plugs.

Just recevied an email from the man himself, its reads....

'Thank you for getting a Cornell Pedal.
Yes provided you only use that power supply for the pedal you can, just remember that it is positive earth,
if you use the battery wires to connect to your supply red is positive as you would normally expect.'

OK, get that DC jack I linked and connect red to the longer lug, and black to the smaller one.

Nah worries.

You probably know this already but when drilling the case give yourself an indentation to start with, and then work up from 2.5mm -> 7mm -> 8mm using HSS bits.

Always good to be reminded, annoyingly the battery compartment is at the front of the pedal & the circuit at the back..... going to have to drill the side of the enclosure about 1 to 1.5cm off the jack... going to be tight so will drill from inside the box.
