I think maybe the base coat on these is red, so you get a bit of a purple flav from the blue sparkle.

Are Mustangs of this era thinner than Strats and the like?

My 66 was 1 1/2" thick.

The red is most likely Dakota Red. Many Fender Custom Colors are often painted over stock colors. Some times they were not even clear coated. never heard of Fender outsourcing finishes before. I can understand though, you need a larger needle on your gun to spray flakes like that, and steady hand (to lite, it's ruff... to heavy, it all lays down flat).

ASH (adam) from the JS board, years ago told me... candy colors are transparent colors sprayed over a silver base color.

in the goldern years book there was mention about fender using the car paint shops for the special paint jobs like the flake finishes. given the costs and the way they were sold (through reps) it was the equivalent of the custom shop I guess

Lake Placid Blue used to be my favorite color but I find it kind of boring now. I have been in love with Cobalt Blue by Rustoelum. It's changes color quickly from blue/purple depending on the lighting & angle you look at it... with tons of flakes. I sprayed my 65 Jag built by a luthier in that color. Had to many issues with the finish, it was way to sensitive. I had used acrylic, nitro & alcohol on it. I'm gonna track down a poly form of the color and B&B the JS neck on it (maybe let paulk do the work)... that's my project for 2012.

Believe all the colors they used were car colors. ReRanch.com tells you where each color came from, Ice Blue - Corvette...
