Double bass drums in 1963? Woah! Has he had it from new? If so, why did he buy double bass drums? I mean, what kind of stuff was he playing?

I know a guy with a mid 60s ludwig double-bass kit too! He uses two speed king pedals which blows my mind. They're the standard old-school Ludwig pedal, the Bonzo/Ringo pedal, they have twin compression springs rather than an expansion spring and are direct-drive, a feel unlike any camco-style chain drive pedal, so it's pretty tough to be precise/comfortable with them if you've learned on newer pedals, but they're so FAST... they also squeak like a mother (as heard on Led Zeps "since i been loving you")
That's how I met him, I traded him a DW 7000SP and a current production Speed King for a couple of his '60s/'70s SKs, which are all broken-in and smooth. I use them with wooden beaters and no reso head and it just goes "THWACK, MOTHERFUCKER."
There's a nasty DW-40 stain on my drum rug now though. At least I always know where to put the kick when I'm setting up.
Vintage Ludwig and Gretsch kits make the world go 'round, a not-so-well-kept secret.

I've seen those... compared to the kick pedals they're so much rarer/more pricey when you find 'em. You can still get '60s speed kings for less than $100 (less than the current production ones).
That's really cool though, I'd really just like to find some old Ludwig bass/tom shells and fix everything wrong with my kit... my snare is a '69 Acrolyte, I think that started it.

the drummer from the first band I was in, when I was like 12, had an original set of pink oyster Rodgers drums in the Ringo configuration, and they were fucking awesome. I've never seen another kit like it.
