a decent mid price range overdrive

ive used a mixture of amp overdrive (fender hot rod deluxe) and then more recently a combination of tubescreamer and boss sd1 all of which ive been "happy" with but its not really just right.
so im throwing it out for suggestions. i absolutely LOVE the internet by dwarfcraft so thats kinda the target tone but i cant really go to that price. im looking at around 50-60 quid.
the ts and the sd1 are just too "boxy" for my liking and i do like the idea or having the inbuilt boost that the internet has.
suggestions guys
cheers

The Formula 5 clone that i'm selling.

'boxy' isn't something I'd describe those two pedals... they're marketed as being quite open and transparent. I could only imagine that'd sound quite shrill if anything.
Can you elaborate a little ?
Also, what guitar(s) are you using ?

erm i dont know how id describe it more than saying the pedals in question i find are quite boxy, honkey and not got enough clarity in them for me.

Nobels ODR-S, still one of my fave ODs to this day, despite the less-than perfect construction. Get Mike to make you a clone, totally worth it.
3-band EQ and all, shape it to YOUR needs!

Good point, I didn't notice that.
Ben - it's in the classifieds but I now realise you won't be able to see it until you've made one more post. It's a Catalinbread Formula No. 5 clone made for me by Christian @ Magnetic Effects (also of The Datsuns). Very nice sounding drive, gets a nice Neil Young-ish tone. Supposed to sound like a Fender Deluxe amp, I think. There are plenty of demos on the web if you want to get an idea of what it sounds like.

Cheap and Good in my opinion:
Marshall GV-2 Guv'nor Plus - great EQ, lovely Marshally sounds
Marshall BB-2 - more of a pedaly overdrive but nevertheless nice
Boss OD-3 - way more open and bass responsive than the SD-1. Great gain range
Danelectro Cool Cat Drive - Fulltone OCD clone with an output buffer.
All can be found very cheap second hand on ebay.

the dano CC Drive is a great value pedal that would be worth a blast on.

I was super impressed when I built one, if you can find an original for cheap go for it - super super versatile.

I'm still an Ibanez TS7 user ('Hot' setting) but the Marshall's and Dano's offer superb value for money.
Bad Monkeys are okay as well, better EQ range than the TS, it has to be said.

Also check out all of Behringers stuff.
I would recommend this in a heartbeat:

Doog made a demo of this on youtube and I've played it - so good!

I had doog's tube monster, fucking great pedal. I used it with my old blues deluxe(close cousin of your hot rod) and it beat the crap out of the onvoard drive. That said, the CC drive is pretty good, I only changed mine out when I was lucky to get an actual OCD.

The CC Drive is great, I sold mine on to prog and I do miss it. But I might check out either a CC Transparent overdrive or and ODR-1 by Nobels if I have the money at some point - which sadly looks unlikely.

I have that pedal now. It's excellent. Always wanted to do the bitmo mods to it.
